Chapter 18. Hellova thing!

It didn’t take very long to explain to Carl what basically had happened and where we suspected Rose and Edward might be, Carl said the chopper would be with us in a couple of hours and offered his Den House as a base while we searched. The plan was that we would fly a grid search over the city and hopefully I would get the mate feeling when we were close. Once the area had been narrowed down combined teams from both ours and Carl’s packs would search the area and locate Rose and Edward. After that, the finer points of the plan were a little hazy, but it was at least something we could work with. There were about to be the longest hours of my life! The downwash from the chopper as it landed a couple of hours later stirred up the dust from the training grounds. Now the May Moon fire was gone and the battle over the fields had been returned to their correct and usual usage, running tracks and work out areas. The grass seemed to be doing extra well where the vampires had bled so perhaps it liked the taste – vampire grass – that was a topic no one seemed to want to get into discussing.      Carl strode towards us, his standard Shirt and jeans combo, a flight helmet under one arm. He did not shake hands with anyone, I presume that it was safer in his head not to offer to shake than offend the vampires by doing something wrong, then again perhaps he didn’t want to shake the vampire’s hands and didn’t want us to notice. Maybe he just didn’t want to shake hands? Who knows? “Lemme get this straight… you guys have lost 2 vamps…. Er Vampires? Correct?” We all nod “Yes” I said “The English one and my mate, we think they have been captured. Possibly by the rogues who attacked our pack on the May Moon. Possibly for revenge.” Carl thought about it for a second “Hellova Thing!” He thinks a few seconds more, just as Pops and I both open our mouths Carl speaks again “Lemme see….. the guy who wanted my pups returned and the gal who brought the message? Yeah?” we all nod “The got grabbed by …… rogue somethings…” we all nod again. This time Carl nods with us, “And your mate is the dancer girl with the message?” I nod starting to feel like some kind of dashboard poodle. Carl thinks again, then he turns and waves the pilot over towards us. “Vince! Get over here! Hellova thing and I need your brain!” The pilot, wearing a grey flying suit with a wolf head and the spiral shell stitched onto the breast pocket, sauntered over. He removed his flying helmet as he approached, slowly he acknowledged each in turn: Pops – a nod “Alpha” Ma – a small bow “Luna” Me – a nod “Son” Then he turned to the 2 vampires, Tol and Rebekka stood side by side a little distance from us, enough to show they were a different group, the pilot nodded towards them; “Sir, Maam” both vampires looked a little startled, but both nodded back to him. Finally, he turned to Carl, rather than bow he raised his chin in a quick motion “Sup Boss?” “Hellova thing Vince!” Carl turned full to face the pilot. “These guys” he waved his hand towards all of us behind him “Have lost a couple of vamp…..ires, the main ones who helped the pups get rescued, and our pack is kinda pro vamp an the moment; hellova thing! Well, these think they are in Rideout but can’t communicate; being vamp and all; they’ve been thinking if they can fly over the area they might…. Feel something, kinda narrow down where to look. So I need your brain, cant be searching the whole city, we need to narrow it down a bit. And you’re the best wolf to think that! Hellova thing!”  It was Rebekka who asked the obvious question “Why would Vince be the best man?” she queried, he face frowning with the puzzle behind the question. The pilot answered her directly “Maam, Ih own the lectricity company that services Rideout and the areas, I have permission to fly choppers all over them skys, Ih know where the hotspots are and where there shouldn’t be no usage. If there’s a rogue hideout in Rideout I’ll find it!” He nodded as though confirming physically his statement. “Ih know just where to start!” and pulling the helmet back onto his head he turned and strode towards the chopper. Carl grinned, tossed the helmet he carried over to me “Hurry up kid, wheels up in 10!” Then he turned to Rebekka; “Don’t worry Maam, I’ll get your pups back like you got mine!” then he shook his head again “Hellova thing!”
