CHAPTER 8 The sun rose in the kingdom and Aurora felt the rays of the sun touch her light and delicate skin. She quickly rose up to have her bath and went into the castle kitchen. She tapped on one of the cooks and asked about where Lucas’s food was. The girl pointed her to it and she wet there to pick it up, before heading to the dungeon. Just like before, the guard saw her with the food and after being informed about her having to serve Lucas’s food, he led her to the cell without questioning her. Aurora looked at the guard’s face but she noticed that it was a different person, someone she knew, Ethan. Ethan was a Beta wolf in the pack and one of the wolves usually assigned on hunting missions. “Surprised to see me?” he said as he led the way. Aurora didn’t reply and he knew this well. “I was reassigned for guard duty temporarily by the Alpha Supreme.” Aurora nodded and they reached the door to Lucas’s cell. “Enjoy your stay with the criminal.” Ethan said with a smile that didn’t feel like a smile. Aurora reluctantly walked into the cell and stood near the door. She looked closely at Lucas, who looked lifeless for a while. She recalled yesterday’s event but tried not to think about it too much. She mustered some courage and walked up to him. Seeing his face, she noticed that he was fast asleep. Such peaceful face. Who would believe that someone who was known to be a cold blooded killer would look this peaceful. A smile kept up her face as she dropped the food. ‘He’s really handsome.’ She thought to herself as she gave him one last look before turning to leave. However, something suddenly grabbed her legs. “Why leave so early? Why don’t you join me for breakfast.” Lucas said with a mischievous voice. Aurora’s heart skipped a beat and all sort of feelings of affection disappeared instantly. She looked at him with fear all over her face. Her forehead began to sweat and she was extremely scared. “It’s ok. I won’t harm you.” Lucas said and let her leg go. Aurora who was thinking of running off decided to pocket the idea and she sat down with him. “Even if you can’t speak, you should be able to use sign language, right?” He asked. Aurora nodded her head in response. Even if she didn’t want to speak to this man, she had to do it. After all, it was her mission. Lucas heaved a sigh of relief, “That’s better. Guess you aren’t completely useless.” He muttered but Aurora heard him clearly. “So how long have you been like this?” He asked again. (Since I was born.) she responded with a few gestures of her hand. Lucas’s look turned solemn. “Sorry about that.” He said with a tone of sympathy. Aurora didn’t say anything afterwards. Lucas reached out for the tray of food and dragged it closer. He tore a bit of bread from the tray and put it in his mouth. Aurora observed him from and studied him in her mind. In truth, lots of thoughts were running through her mind. ‘Is he… gonna eat me?’ ‘I can’t believe I’m finally talking to him.’ ‘Too bad. He has a bit of shitty personality. What am I thinking…’ she thought as she shook her head vigorously. She was meant to observe this man and probably get closer to him, but would she do that if she couldn’t even muster the courage to communicate with him? Well, Lucas solved that problem for her. “What is your name?” He asked. Aurora stopped and looked at him, slightly tense. “You don’t need to be too tense. I won’t eat you.” He said and looked at her with Lucas smiled and reached out his hand while gesturing for her to come closer, “Come closer” He said. His smile was a bit warm, but not to Aurora. However, she slowly moved closer to him. He picked up his bread and tore it in two and handed her one half. She didn’t want to accept it but he insisted. She slowly took it off his hands and she felt weird, taking food from a prisoner. “So… what’s your name?” He asked again, more warmly this time. Aurora looked around and saw a small stick nearby. She went ahead to pick it up and began to write her name down. Lucas watched her as she wrote her name and used the opportunity to size her up. Her beauty was actually intoxicating and her long white hair was one of her beautiful features. She was a full woman, and if it weren’t for her disability, she wasn’t actually a bad mate. ‘Hmm… she’s not so bad after all.’ He smiled inside. Aurora finished spelling her name and showed him. He read it and he smiled. “Aurora. What a beautiful name.” He voiced out his compliment with a smile. Aurora blushed and turned her face in embarrassment. After all, no one has ever complimented her before. (Thank you.) She said and ate the bread given to her. She noticed that the bread didn’t taste all too well and she felt like spitting it out. However, when she looked into her mate’s eye, he seemed to be eating it without any complaints. It was probably even delicious to him. She felt a bit of pity and made up her mind, ‘I’ll make sure the food brought to him is personal cooked by me.’ She thought in her mind. There was a bit of silence between them which made her slightly uncomfortable so she decided to start a topic. She raised her hand slightly to draw Lucas’s attention. “Yes?” He answered. (Um… why are you here?) she asked with her hand gestures. Lucas’s face which had a little sign of smiling suddenly turned sour and his look turned solemn. He began to recall how he got here and the many years he spent being banished to the outlands before being captured by Jayden. He truly didn’t want to talk about it, as his journey had always been a treacherous one. So many of his old friends, comrades, and pack members were wiped out. He was a lone wolf and he didn’t think he had any member of his pack alive anymore. Aurora noticed his sad face and she felt like she had asked a very sensitive question. (I’m sorry for asking. It’s so insensitive of me. If you don’t want to answer the question it’s fine.) she gestured and kept mute. “Why did you ask in the first place?” Lucas inquired. Aurora was hesitant to reply but she did anyways. (I was curious as to why you were treated this way. Your crimes were so grave that you had to be judged by the Council of the High Table comprising of the Alphas of all the packs in this kingdom. Barely any criminal that I know of gets that opportunity.) she gestured. Lucas nodded as he too was aware. After all, he was also a council members at some point in time. Thinking of what transpired during the judgement, he couldn’t help but cuss at the council members. “Those motherf*ckers. Blinded by their greed and can’t see the enemy within.” He muttered. Aurora heard what he said and asked what was wrong but Lucas didn’t mind her and he just sighed. Aurora tilted her head as she was confused. ’Enemy within?’ she thought to herself and she began to have a feeling that things in the kingdom weren’t actually as simple as they looked “Don’t worry about it. There is no need to bother about such worrisome topics.” Lucas said before smiling, “Let’s leave me aside. Let’s talk about you. Tell me more about you.” Aurora thought about what to say as her own life wasn’t as eventful as Lucas’s. (I was born in the Kingdom of Trishia and raised here. I spent about two years there but something big happened that made us have to relocate. All I remember is that after leaving Trisha, I never saw my father again. As for my mother… she died as a cook for the castle when I was 10 and I’ve taken up the job of a cook ever since. With no one to raise me, I’ve been fending for myself at a young age.) Aurora explained and these memories began to turn her mood sour. Lucas felt pity for her and he held her hand. She shook when she noticed his hand on hers and looked at his eyes. “I’m so sorry about your parents.” He said with sympathy in his voice. Aurora was caught up in the moment for a while before quickly withdrawing her hand and rubbing it. Lucas sighed and drank from the water on his tray. Suddenly, their conversation was interrupted by Ethan. “Time’s up, Miss. You don’t wanna spend all day with a prisoner do you?” He said as he opened the door. ‘I actually would like to spend more time with him.’ She thought before dropping the remaining bread on his tray and carried her treatment basket before bowing and leaving the prison. As she reached the door, Lucas’s chains clanged as he raised his hand to wave at her. “See you later, Aurora.” He said. Aurora had the urge to respond but the door was shut tight before she had the opportunity to do so. The Ethan then walked her back to the dungeon entrance.
