(Eleanor's POV)
The next morning, the patrol was just returning when I stepped outside. Their emotions hit me like a physical wave - suspicion, unease, and something darker. The whispers started as soon as they spotted me.
"Another rogue wolf sighting at the eastern border..."
"Third one this week..."
"Right after she arrived..."
They weren't even trying to be subtle anymore. A muscular beta named Kyle broke away from the group, approaching me with open hostility. Several other wolves followed, forming a loose semicircle.
"It's strange that rogue wolves started appearing right after you arrived." His voice carried across the clearing, ensuring others would hear. "What did you bring with you, outsider?"
The accusation hung in the air, connecting the dots between the threatening note and the recent disturbances. My wolf bristled at the challenge, but I kept my voice steady. "I brought nothing but myself and my desire to be part of this pack."
"Part of this pack?" He sneered. "Or part of our Alpha's bed?"
Before I could respond, a horn sounded - the call for a pack council meeting. Kyle gave me one last contemptuous look before turning away. "Better hurry, omega. Wouldn't want to keep your protector waiting."
The main hall was already packed when I arrived. Alexander stood at the front, his presence commanding even in silence. The moonstone at my throat warmed in response to his proximity, but I pushed aside the flutter in my chest. Now wasn't the time for distractions.
"We've had multiple reports of rogue wolves in our territory," Alexander began, his voice carrying to every corner. "Three hunting parties have encountered them in the past week alone."
Murmurs rippled through the crowd. A female wolf with silver streaks in her dark hair - one of the senior hunters - stepped forward. "These aren't normal rogues, Alpha. They're organized, working in patterns. Someone's directing them."
"And isn't it convenient," Kyle's voice cut through the murmurs, "that these attacks started right after we took in an outsider? One with connections to a pack that's already threatened us?"
All eyes turned to me. The weight of their suspicion felt like a physical pressure on my chest. Through my enhanced senses, I could feel their emotions churning - fear, distrust, anger. The threatening note in my cabin suddenly felt more significant.
Alexander's eyes flashed dangerously. "Eleanor has proven herself-"
"Has she?" Another wolf interrupted. "All we've seen is you protecting her. Maybe there's a reason William warned us about her."
The mention of my ex-fiancé sent ice through my veins. William. Of course he wouldn't let me go so easily. How many of them had he contacted? What poison had he been spreading?
"Enough." Alexander's voice cracked like thunder, making several wolves flinch. "Eleanor is under my protection, but she's also earned her place here through her own merit. Anyone who questions that can take it up with me directly."
The meeting dissolved into discussions about patrol schedules and defense strategies, but I barely heard them. My mind raced with possibilities, each worse than the last. I slipped out early, needing space to think.
That's when the attack began.
The first howl of alarm cut through the night like a knife. Then another, and another - a cascade of warnings that had me racing toward the sound before conscious thought kicked in.
Chaos erupted across the territory. Wolves poured from their homes, shifting forms as they ran. Through my enhanced senses, I could feel the intruders - at least a dozen rogue wolves, their energy signatures wild and aggressive.
I hadn't been assigned to a defense team - another sign of the pack's distrust - but I couldn't stand idle. My wolf surged forward eagerly as I shifted, our shared power amplified by weeks of training with Alexander.
The forest came alive around me in a way I'd never experienced. Every rustle of movement, every heartbeat, every surge of energy registered clearly. I could sense the rogues' positions as distinctly as if they were marked on a map.
"They're flanking the nursery!" I shouted, my voice carrying with unexpected authority. "Three coming from the east, two from the north!"
Several defenders changed course immediately, responding to my warning. I rushed to help, my smaller omega form allowing me to slip through the undergrowth with silent speed.
One of the rogues - a massive brute - had cornered a young pack member. Without hesitation, I launched myself between them. The rogue's surprise at being challenged by an omega gave me the split second I needed.
Remembering Alexander's training, I used the rogue's size against him. Duck, weave, strike - my smaller form made me faster, more agile. When the rogue lunged, I was already moving, my teeth finding the vulnerable spot behind his jaw. He went down hard.
But as I turned to check on the young wolf, something caught my eye. A familiar figure darting through the shadows, her scent triggering memories I'd rather forget.
Isabella.
My ex-fiancé's lover was here, coordinating with the rogues. Before I could pursue her, she vanished into the darkness, leaving me with a sickening realization. This wasn't a random attack. This was William, reaching out to remind me that he wasn't finished with me yet.
The battle ended as suddenly as it had begun. As the last of the rogues retreated, wolves gathered in the main clearing to assess the damage. To my surprise, several approached me.
"Those warnings saved my pups," one mother said softly.
"I've never seen an omega fight like that," admitted another.
"How did you know where they'd strike?"
Alexander appeared beside me, his presence steady and warm. "Eleanor's abilities are unique," he announced to the gathering. "Tonight, she proved her worth to this pack not through my protection, but through her own strength."
The acknowledgment felt sweet, but I couldn't fully enjoy it. The image of Isabella haunted me, along with all its implications. Should I tell Alexander what I'd seen? Or would claiming to recognize William's lover just make the pack doubt me more?
Looking out over the territory as dawn broke, I felt the weight of secrets pressing down. I'd earned some respect tonight, yes. But if William was truly behind these attacks, this was just the beginning.
