The gentle hand she held made her heart flutter. Next to her was the Supreme Virtue, and before her was the Commander.
She let go of the hand and pressed her index finger inside a hole in the smooth surface of the machine. Something pierced her finger, and it bled. Then something sucked in a drop of her blood and a soothing coolness removed the pain. Her finger was once again free and completely healed. The machine lit up and exuded a sound no human being had heard in the last thousand years. And just as it started, so did it switch off.
“The job is done,” Laylah said.
