The Junction

The crimson glow of the emergency lights painted the lower vault corridors in a visceral, bloody hue. Zamani moved with calculated precision, her bare shoulder brushing the cold concrete wall as she slipped past a maze of heavy, exposed pipes. The air down here was thick, choked with the sharp smell of ozone and the unmistakable, bitter metallic sting of Ashwood powder. Up ahead, the main terminal door to the secondary armory hung slightly ajar, its electronic lock sparking violently. Through the narrow gap, Zamani could see the remaining two rebel soldiers. They weren’t looking for a fight; they were frantically stacking lead-lined tactical cases onto a heavy transport cart. "Hurry up," the taller one hissed, his voice strained with panic as he hauled a heavy rifle case stamped with the Silver Ridge insignia. "The Alpha is clearing the upper study. If we don’t get these crates to the service tunnel before the sub-grid purges the override, we’re dead men." "What about the rogue?" the second asked, adjusting his grip on a heavy crowbar. "The shadow said she’d be dead in the cells by now." "Forget the stray. She was just the smoke screen to keep the Enforcers busy while we drained the vault. Move!" Zamani leaned back against the wall, her mind spinning. A smoke screen. They never intended for her to survive the 48-hour clock; the entire setup was designed to keep Douglas’s military apparatus chasing its own tail in the Blackwood Neutral Zone while the real threat hollowed out his fortress from within. She weighed the silver-edged blade she had stolen from the guard upstairs. Two against one. They were heavily armed, but they were loud, panicked, and entirely reliant on their sense of smell to detect an ambush. She stepped around the corner, her movements completely silent, her non-existent scent rendering her a total ghost in the dark. Before the taller rebel could even turn his head, Zamani lunged. She drove the butt of her blade hard into his temple. He went down hard, the heavy rifle case slipping from his grip and clattering loudly against the concrete floor. "What the—" the second rebel lunged forward, swinging the heavy iron crowbar in a blind, desperate arc. Zamani ducked under the swing, the rushing air whistling past her ear. She swept her leg across the floor, catching him right behind the knee. He stumbled, losing his balance, but as he fell, his flailing hand caught Zamani’s wrist. The silver alloy lining of his tactical glove seared against her skin like a hot iron. Zamani bit back a scream, a sharp gasp tearing from her throat as the silver burn temporarily scrambled her senses. The rebel scrambled to his feet, raising the crowbar for a lethal downward strike. "Die, stray—" BOOM. The reinforced steel security door to the junction room didn't just open—it flew off its hinges, slamming flat into the opposite wall with a deafening screech of tearing metal. Alpha Douglas Stevens stood in the shattered doorway, a towering silhouette of absolute, terrifying destruction. His amber eyes were completely gone, replaced by a brilliant, blinding gold that radiated a suffocating wave of dominant Alpha pressure. The air in the room grew heavy, making it physically difficult to breathe. In a flash of pure, explosive speed, Douglas closed the distance. He caught the remaining rebel by the front of his tactical vest, lifting him completely off the ground with a single hand, and slammed him into the concrete pillar. The structural support cracked under the impact. "Touch her again," Douglas growled, his voice a deep, gravelly vibration that shook the pipes overhead, "and I’ll feed your wolf to the hounds piece by piece." The rebel went limp, completely crushed by the sheer weight of the Alpha core command. Douglas dropped him like a ragdoll and instantly turned his attention to Zamani. He stepped toward her, his breathing heavy, his chest heaving under his torn tactical shirt. The golden fire in his eyes slowly receded, leaving behind a fierce, possessive panic as his gaze locked onto her burned wrist. "Zamani," he breathed, reaching out. The moment his bare fingers closed around her uninjured hand to pull her up, the air between them fractured. CRACKLE. A violent, blinding arc of static electricity shot between their palms, far stronger than the sparks in the study. The physical jolt forced a sharp gasp from Zamani's lips, a heavy shock of pure, magnetic energy rushing straight to her heart. Douglas groaned, his grip tightening rather than letting go, his inner wolf roaring in a primal, desperate demand to shield, claim, and lock the scentless rogue away from the rest of the world. Zamani pulled her hand back with a fierce yank, her chest heaving as she stared at him through the crimson emergency light. "I told you, Douglas," she whispered, her voice trembling slightly from the raw shock. "The shadow is in your house. And we're running out of time."
