The Scalpel's Ledger

The subterranean laboratory was a stark contrast to the blood-red chaos of the lower vaults. Here, the air was pristine, sterile, and cold. Row after row of high-tech forensic equipment hummed quietly under harsh, surgical white lights. In the center of the room stood Beta Paul Smith. He had already changed back into a fresh, unwrinkled charcoal coat, looking completely undisturbed by the violent system purge that had just rocked the estate. He was leaning against a sleek steel island, his eyes fixed on a glowing transparent tablet. When the heavy blast doors slid open, Douglas stepped in first, his massive frame still radiating the heat of battle. Zamani followed a step behind him, her movements light and completely silent. Paul didn't look up immediately. He tapped the glass screen, sending a massive holographic data stream floating into the air between them. "You're cutting it close, Douglas. According to the tactical countdown, you have exactly twenty-five hours left to fulfill your end of the asylum bargain." "Cut the data talk, Paul," Douglas growled, crossing his massive arms over his chest. "Tell me about the residential terminal log." Paul finally raised his head, his polite, razor-sharp smile cutting through the cold room. His gaze flicked briefly to Zamani's bandaged wrist, then back to the Alpha. "The terminal in your private wing was accessed at precisely 11:14 PM. The user bypassed the biometrics by inputting an emergency override cipher—a code issued only to the three founding members of the High Traditionalist Council." "Elder Vance," Zamani stated flatly, leaning against the edge of a clean workstation. "He was the one loudly demanding my execution at the border. Smoke and mirrors." "An excellent deduction, Miss Zamani," Paul murmured, adjusting his cuffs. "But it gets mathematically more interesting. Vance didn't just unlock the armory. My tracking protocols show that the stolen Ashwood weapons are being moved through a decommissioned drainage tunnel that leads directly to the eastern border—right into the hands of the radical factions waiting in the Blackwood Neutral Zone." Douglas's eyes flared gold. "Vance is arming a rebellion to take the Pack from within." "He is," Paul agreed smoothly. "But he isn't doing it alone. The data suggests he is being backed by a silent partner in the underworld. Someone who funded the initial border distraction." Zamani stiffened, the pieces clicking together in her mind. Silas. The broker at The Broken Fang hadn't just been a holding cell for the weapons; he was the bridge connecting the council traitor to the rogue radicals. "We ambush them at the drainage tunnel exit," Douglas commanded, his voice dropping into a dark, operational tone. "We catch Vance red-handed with the contraband." "A high-probability strategy," Paul noted, tapping his tablet to bring up a subterranean map of the Blackwood valley borders. "However, you face a logistical variable. The moment Vance realizes the estate's main power grid has recovered, he will accelerate his extraction. You have less than an hour before the final shipment crosses the pack line." Douglas turned sharply toward Zamani. The sudden movement brought him within inches of her, and the air between them instantly compressed. A tiny, invisible hiss of static electricity snapped through the small gap separating them, making the hairs on Zamani's arms stand up. "You're the only one who knows those tunnels from the neutral side," Douglas said, his amber eyes locking onto hers with intense, magnetic friction. "You guide my tactical unit through the blind spots." Zamani stared right back into the golden warmth of his gaze, her jaw set. "I guide you to the exit, Douglas. But the moment Vance is down and my name is clear, you sign those asylum papers. No more chess games." Paul watched the exchange from behind his digital screen, his cold, analytical eyes tracking the raw physical heat vibrating between the Alpha and the rogue. He smiled softly to himself, quietly logging the data. The stress test was working perfectly. The board was set for the final clash.
