The Alpha’s Grip

508 Words
The chaotic noise of the bar faded into a tense, ringing silence as Douglas stepped into the private booth. His boots crunched on shattered glass, his chest heaving under his leather jacket as he reined in the wild, predatory energy of his wolf. His amber eyes swept over Silas, who was wisely keeping his hands flat on the table, before locking squarely onto Zamani. "You're late," Douglas rumbled, his voice low, gravelly, and laced with a terrifying possessiveness. "By twenty seconds, Alpha," Zamani countered, crossing her arms to hide the slight tremor in her hands. That familiar, static heat was already thick in the air between them, drawing her toward him like gravity. "And if you hadn't played the wrecking ball, I would have had a name." Paul stepped fully into the light of the booth, his fingers lightly brushing the edge of the lead-lined crate. His analytical gaze flicked from the lock to Silas, completely unbothered by the violence that had just unfolded. "He wouldn't have given you a name, sweetheart. Silas only sells the pieces of the puzzle he’s allowed to. Isn't that right, old friend?" Silas scoffed, leaning back. "The Beta is right. I’m just the middleman. The crate stays, the girl goes, and you line my pockets for the property damage, Alpha Stevens." Douglas didn't answer with words. He moved with a swift, terrifying efficiency, his large hand snapping out to grab the heavy lead-lined crate by its iron handle, lifting it as if it weighed nothing. With his other hand, he firmly gripped Zamani’s upper arm, pulling her flushing against his side. The contact was explosive. A fierce, electric shock shot straight through Zamani’s core, making her gasp softly. Douglas stiffened, his golden eyes flaring with a sudden, primitive hunger as his wolf reacted violently to her untraceable scent. For a second, his grip tightened, holding her so close she could feel the thunderous beat of his heart. "We're leaving," Douglas commanded, his voice dropping an octave, completely strained by the effort to control his instincts. "Paul, secure the perimeter. We're taking the contraband and the rogue back to the estate." Paul watched them, his sharp eyes lingering on the exact spot where Douglas’s hand met Zamani’s arm. A polite, razor-sharp smile touched his lips, though his eyes remained entirely cold. "Of course, Alpha. I'll make sure we weren't followed. Wouldn't want anyone interrupting your... interrogation." As Douglas marched her out of the ruined bar, his heavy grip never wavering, Zamani looked back over her shoulder. Paul was standing in the shadows of the doorway, his posture relaxed, his thumb slowly tracing his lower lip. He caught her gaze and gave a slow, deliberate nod—a silent communicator that he knew exactly what game was being played, even if she and Douglas were still blind to the rules. The trap was closing, and Zamani was trapped between an Alpha who wanted to claim her, and a Beta who wanted to dismantle her.
