The Anatomy of a Lie

698 Words
The ride back to the Silver Ridge estate was dead silent, but the air inside the SUV was thick enough to choke a human. The heavy lead-lined crate sat on the floorboards between Zamani’s feet, its bitter, metallic tang leaking out into the cabin. Douglas drove like a man possessed, his knuckles white against the steering wheel, his jaw clenched so tightly the muscles in his cheek ticked. Every few miles, his amber eyes would s***h to the rearview mirror, tracking Zamani’s face, his wolf practically pacing a hole through the floorboards. In the passenger seat, Paul was entirely still, his tablet dark. He was staring out the side window into the foggy expanse of the Blackwood pines, his thumb slowly tapping against his knee in a rhythmic, hypnotic cadence. The moment Douglas killed the engine in the estate’s underground garage, he didn't wait. He hauled the crate out with one hand and yanked Zamani’s door open with the other. He didn't grab her arm this time—perhaps fearing the sudden, violent jolt of electricity that kept threatening to shatter his rigid composure—but his massive frame boxed her in, forcing her to step out right into his space. "To the laboratory," Douglas commanded, his voice a low, gravelly rasp. "I want the ashwood tested. If a single ounce of that stash is missing, we have a bigger problem than a rogue on our border." "I'll handle the analysis," Paul said smoothly, stepping out of the passenger side and smoothing down his trench coat. He took the heavy crate from Douglas’s hand with an easy strength that belied his refined posture. "Why don't you take our guest to the study, Douglas? She looks... exhausted. And I imagine you have a few choice questions about her relationship with Silas." Douglas’s eyes narrowed, a flash of warning gold cutting through his pupils. "Don't tell me how to run an interrogation, Paul." "Never, Alpha," Paul murmured, his polite, razor-sharp smile returning. He met Zamani’s eyes over Douglas’s shoulder, giving her a slow, deliberate look that felt less like reassurance and more like an invitation to a duel. "Just ensuring the strategy remains clean." With that, the Beta turned and walked down the brightly lit corridor toward the secure labs, the heavy metal door clicking shut behind him. Douglas turned his full, suffocating attention back to Zamani. Without a word, he grabbed her wrist—not with the blistered cruelty of the silver cuffs, but with a fierce, burning grip that sent a wildfire of static electricity straight up her arm. He marched her up the private elevator and into his personal study, slamming the heavy oak door shut behind them. "Start talking," Douglas growled, pinning her against the door with his towering frame, his chest heaving as he leaned down into her space. "Silas knew you were coming. He said the person who dropped that crate off knew a muted rogue would find it. Who are you working with, Zamani?" Zamani swallowed hard, her heart hammering against her ribs, but she forced her gaze to remain sharp and defiant. "If I knew who it was, do you think I'd let myself get caught on your border? I'm the scapegoat, Douglas! Someone in your own pack knows I have a muted scent. Someone inside your walls set this up so you would find me with the murder weapon!" Douglas’s hand slid from her wrist to the wood of the door right beside her head, his body leaning so close she could feel the intoxicating heat radiating off his skin. His wolf was roaring, completely conflicted between the logic of his pack's security and the primal, possessive urge to claim the beautiful mystery right in front of him. "My pack is loyal," Douglas whispered fiercely, his eyes burning into hers. "They wouldn't dare." "Then you're blind," Zamani hissed, her voice dropping to a breathless whisper as she stared up into his fierce, glowing eyes. "Because the person who set this up isn't just a thief. They’re a grandmaster. And they’re watching us play right into their hands.
