You're a hard woman to find, Zamani," Silas said, his voice like grinding stones as he gestured for the bouncers to step aside.
Zamani walked into the private booth, her eyes instantly dropping to the heavy, lead-lined crate resting on the floor. The bitter, toxic tang of hidden ashwood was suffocatingly sharp in the enclosed space. "I like to keep moving, Silas. It keeps me alive. Now, tell me why the Silver Ridge Pack’s stolen inventory is sitting right next to your boots."
Silas chuckled, a low, rumbling sound that vibrated with dark amusement. He leaned forward into the dim light, his scarred face twisting into a mocking smirk. "Stolen? No, sweetheart. This was a transaction. A very expensive one. The person who delivered this crate said a rogue with a muted scent would come looking for it. They paid me a handsome sum to make sure you found it."
A cold dread pooled in Zamani’s stomach. Her hyper-vigilant mind instantly mapped out the pieces of the board. The break-in at the armory, her convenient capture at the border, the trail leading perfectly to this dive bar—it wasn't just a frame job. It was a perfectly orchestrated chess match, and she was the bait.
"Who delivered it?" she demanded, her voice dropping to a sharp, dangerous whisper.
"A shadow," Silas replied, tapping his glass. "Someone who knows the inner workings of the Silver Ridge Pack entirely too well."
Before Zamani could push further, the heavy metal door of the bar didn't just open—it shattered inward, ripped completely off its hinges.
The five minutes were up.
Douglas crossed the threshold like a storm deity, his raw, suffocating Alpha aura dropping the temperature of the entire room. Wolves shrieked, scrambling over tables and crashing into walls just to escape the path of his terrifying, golden-eyed rage. Every predatory instinct he possessed was burning at the surface, his wolf utterly furious that she had been out of his sight.
"Zamani!" Douglas’s voice roared through the smoke, a sound of pure, unyielding dominance that made the concrete floor vibrate.
Silas’s bouncers lunged forward, drawing silver-tipped blades, but Douglas didn't even slow down. With a burst of blinding speed, he caught the first bouncer by the throat, slamming him into the floor with a bone-crushing impact. He backhanded the second, sending him crashing through the wooden bar structure.
"Douglas, wait!" Zamani shouted, lunging out of the booth.
But as she stepped into the main room, Paul appeared right beside her out of the shadows, his movements entirely silent. He didn't look at the c*****e Douglas was causing. Instead, his sharp, calculating eyes went straight to the lead-lined crate by Silas’s feet. A dark, knowing look crossed his face—one that vanished so quickly Zamani almost thought she imagined it.
"Well, well," Paul murmured, his voice a smooth, chilling purr against her ear as he reached out and gently caught her elbow. "It seems our thief wanted us to find the prize. The question is, Zamani... did they want us to find it, or did they want Douglas to see you standing right next to it?"
Zamani looked from Paul’s unreadable, brilliant smile to Douglas, who was currently stepping over a groaning bouncer, his fierce, possessive gaze locking onto her with a mixture of raw fury and intense relief.
The trap had sprung, and the clock was down to thirty-eight hours.
