The interior of the black SUV smelled of expensive leather, cedarwood, and the suffocating, overlapping aura of two apex predators.
Zamani sat in the backseat, her wrists burning where the silver-laced handcuffs bit into her skin. She kept her jaw clenched, refusing to give them the satisfaction of hearing her groan. Instead, she leaned her head against the cool glass of the window, watching the rain-soaked pine trees of the Blackwood valley blur into dark streaks.
Up front, Douglas drove with a tense, brutal efficiency. His massive hands gripped the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles were white. Every few seconds, his amber eyes would flick to the rearview mirror, locking onto hers. The electric spark from his touch back in the alley was still humming under her skin, a bizarre, foreign warmth that her body kept trying to lean into. It infuriated her.
Paul sat in the passenger seat, tapping away on a sleek tablet, the blue light illuminating his sharp features.
"The elders are already pushing for an execution, Douglas," Paul murmured, not looking up from his screen. "A rogue caught on the border within an hour of an ashwood breach? To them, it's an open-and-shut case. They want her head on a spike at the territory gates by sunrise."
"The elders don't run this pack," Douglas growled, his voice a low, gravelly vibration that made the SUV’s dashboard rattle. "I do."
"Of course," Paul replied smoothly, finally turning around to face Zamani. He rested his arm over the back of his seat, offering that same polite, chilling smile. "But our guest here isn't exactly helping her case. Tell me, Zamani—if that is your real name—how does a lone wolf manage to completely erase their lineage? I’ve interrogated rogues from coast to coast, and every single one of them bleeds a scent that tells me exactly who their parents were. You? You smell like white noise."
Zamani met his calculated gaze with a cold, sharp wit. "Maybe I'm just boring, Beta Smith. Ever think of that?"
Paul let out a soft, melodic laugh. "Oh, you are many things, sweetheart, but boring isn't one of them. The way Douglas's wolf is pacing right now tells me you're a goddamn riddle."
"Shut up, Paul," Douglas snapped, swerving the SUV through a pair of massive, wrought-iron gates hidden deep in the forest.
The vehicle pulled up to a breathtaking, sprawling estate. It was a masterpiece of modern architecture blended with raw nature—glistening glass walls built directly into the side of a jagged stone cliff. This was the heart of the Silver Ridge Pack hierarchy.
The doors clicked unlocked. Douglas was out of the vehicle before the engine had even fully died down. He ripped Zamani’s door open, his heavy grip wrapping around her upper arm to pull her out into the cold night air. The moment his fingers sank into her jacket, that same violent, static shock flared between them.
Douglas stiffened, his chest heaving as he stared down at her, his golden eyes filled with a dangerous, possessive conflict.
"Listen to me carefully, rogue," he whispered, his breath hot against her face over the sound of the pouring rain. "For the next forty-eight hours, you belong to this territory. You sleep where I tell you, you walk where I tell you, and you track the scum who broke into my armory. If you try to run, I won't wait for the elders. I will tear you apart myself."
Zamani smirked, ignoring the searing pain in her wrists and the terrifying heat of his proximity. "Good to know we're on the same page, Alpha."
