CHAPTER THREE

Anna's POV (continued) “I spilled coffee on the CEO’s desk,” I admitted in a choked voice. “And he yelled at me. I just feel so stupid.” Jessica rushed to my side and hugged me. “Hey, it’s okay. Everyone messes up sometimes. Don’t let this break you. You’ve been doing great. Just keep working hard and prove you deserve to be here.” I sniffled and gave her a small, grateful smile. “Thank you, Jessica. That really means a lot.” She gave me a reassuring squeeze on the shoulder before heading back to her workspace. Her words lifted a weight off my chest. I wiped my tears, took a deep breath, and got back to work—more determined than ever. --- Kane’s POV I sat behind my desk, still replaying the scene in my mind. I should’ve fired her. That’s what I would’ve done with any other assistant who spilled coffee on my desk. But I didn’t. Instead, I had yelled... and regretted it almost immediately. The look in her eyes—so frightened, so vulnerable—had pierced something deep inside me. And those eyes... filled with tears yet still holding strength. I ran a hand through my hair, annoyed with myself. What have you done to me, Anna Morgan? The cold, calculating Kane Blake was suddenly unsure. And I hated that. But I couldn’t stop thinking about her. Regret gnawed at me, but I wasn’t ready to admit it to anyone—not even to myself. --- Anna’s POV Though my hands were still a little shaky, I forced myself to focus. I couldn’t afford another mistake—not today. I triple-checked everything. Every document, every detail. I worked in complete silence, zoning in like my life depended on it. A few hours in, one of my co-workers, James, came to me with a panicked look. “Anna, I think I messed up the CEO’s meeting schedule,” he whispered. “Can you take a look?” I nodded and examined the schedule. Sure enough, he had double-booked two meetings in the same time slot. Carefully, I adjusted the schedule, sent out new invites, and fixed the internal log. “There,” I said, handing it back. “All sorted.” James looked at me with relief. “You just saved my life. Thanks, Anna." Kane’s POV I was informed about how Anna handled and corrected an error without blaming her senior colleague. She fixed the issue efficiently and professionally. I was impressed—especially since she didn’t throw anyone under the bus. That kind of maturity is rare. The next day came quickly. Everything went smoothly in the office, but something about Anna had changed. She was noticeably more formal, going out of her way to be extra careful with everything. I now know it’s in her nature to be clumsy, yet today she seemed determined to be perfect. I couldn’t help but notice… she was also avoiding me. It pricked at my chest more than I expected. I’m her boss—I shouldn’t care. But the distance between us made me feel strangely restless. --- Anna’s POV The day passed in a blur of work and effort. I tried to stay as professional and cautious as possible, wanting to prove that I could learn from my mistakes. I barely even looked in Mr. Blake’s direction. I didn’t want to risk another embarrassing encounter. As the day came to an end, I hurried to pack up my things. In my rush, I stumbled again—classic me—but this time, I nearly fell forward… into him. Strong arms caught me before I could hit the ground. My eyes widened in surprise as I looked up—right into his. For a brief moment, everything stilled. There was a quiet intensity in his gaze, and I felt my heart skip a beat. Instead of yelling at me like I expected, he simply said in a calm, firm voice, “Watch your step.” And just like that, he walked away. I stood there, stunned. Why didn’t he snap at me? Why was he… soft? I couldn’t make sense of it. The cold, distant CEO had caught me—and hadn’t scolded me. My mind raced with questions. Getting home, I took a quick bath, slipped into my nightie, and crashed on my bed. Sleep came easily after the crazy day I had. The next morning, my alarm blared like a siren, dragging me out of sleep. I quickly got ready for work, not wanting to be late. As soon as I got to the office, I jumped straight into my routine—serving him his coffee while trying my best to avoid any unnecessary conversation. Then I went on with my tasks: checking and reviewing documents, setting his schedule, and noting that he had a meeting scheduled for tomorrow. Once I was done, I went to report to him. “Sir, you have a meeting scheduled for tomorrow at 10 AM,” I said, keeping my tone professional. He didn’t even look up. “Okay. Get ready, you’re coming with me as my personal assistant.” I simply nodded and turned to leave, my heart beating a little faster at the thought. Just as I stepped out of his office, I nearly ran into someone. Again. It was him—the handsome stranger I bumped into the other day. He smiled at me. “Hey,” he said casually. “I didn’t get the chance to introduce myself the last time. I’m Jake.” I smiled back. “I’m Anna. Sorry about the way I rushed off the other day.” He waved it off. “It’s okay, I figured you were in a hurry. I actually work here too, in one of the departments. What about you?” “I’m a P.A,” I replied simply. His eyebrows raised slightly. “Wow, that’s impressive. So, we’re coworkers, huh?” I chuckled lightly. “Looks like it.” “We should totally talk more,” he said. “How about lunch break in the cafeteria?” “Sure,” I agreed with a small smile. “Great. See you then, Anna.” “See you,” I said and walked back to my office, my thoughts oddly lighter than they’d been all morning. ----- The rest of my day went by smoothly, with no drama and no unexpected chaos—which, honestly, was a relief. Before I knew it, the next day had arrived. I was at my desk, sorting through emails, when my office phone rang. It was him. "Anna," he said in his usual calm and commanding tone, "get the meeting materials ready and meet me downstairs. We’re heading out." "Yes, sir," I replied, quickly hanging up. I gathered the neatly arranged documents, checked everything twice just to be sure, then grabbed my notepad and pen. With everything in hand, I left my office and made my way downstairs to meet him. He was already waiting by the car, dressed in a sharp black suit that looked like it was tailored just for him. Without saying a word, he opened the car door and stepped in, and I followed quietly, taking my seat beside him. The drive was mostly silent, but strangely not uncomfortable. I kept going over the meeting agenda in my mind, reminding myself to stay calm and professional. This was my first official outing with him as his personal assistant, and I didn’t want to mess it up. Kane's POV I watched her approach—calm, holding the files with both hands. There was determination in her step, laced with carefulness. A mix of nervousness and focus. She was trying to look composed, as always. “Ready?” I asked, not bothering to look at her. “Yes, sir,” she replied. Her voice was steady, but I caught the tiny hesitation. She always tried to keep things professional. I liked that. The ride to the meeting venue was quiet, just the faint hum of the engine and the sound of pages rustling as she double-checked the documents. Efficient. Neat. She did her job well, even if she was a little clumsy outside work hours. I leaned slightly to the side, pretending to check my phone but really just glancing at her from the corner of my eye. She looked... different today. Still simple, still Anna, but something about her was softer. Maybe it was her hair loosely tied or the way she bit her lip while reviewing the agenda. We arrived. As we stepped into the meeting room, my mask came on—calm, unreadable, confident. CEOs, partners, executives... all eyes turned to me. But for the first time in a while, I was oddly aware of the person walking just behind me. She stayed close—but not too close. Just enough to do her job without attracting attention. No need for instructions. She was sharp like that. The meeting kicked off. Charts. Projections. I spoke when needed, kept my tone firm but smooth, answered questions, gave directions. All the while, I felt her presence to my right—quietly handing over files when I gestured, jotting down notes without being told.
