Chapter 12: The Whispering Pines
The Forbidden Grove was not a place found on any map of the five kingdoms. It existed in the "In-Between," a pocket of the world where the veil between the physical realm and the spirit wild was thin enough to bleed. To get there, Lucas, Audrey, and a small, elite guard led by Vane had to leave the safety of the stone fortress and trek into the Blackwood—a forest so dense that the sun struggled to touch the mossy floor.
As they rode deeper into the woods, the temperature didn't just drop; the air grew heavy, smelling of ancient ozone and damp earth.
"Stay close," Lucas commanded, his hand never straying far from the hilt of his claymore. His silver eyes were constantly scanning the canopy. "The trees here have memories, Audrey. If they sense fear, they’ll twist the path. You’ll be walking in circles until your heart stops."
Audrey sat tall on her white mare, her leather armor creaking with every movement. The pain from Samantha’s blood-ritual had faded into a dull throb in her chest, a constant reminder that her life was being measured in grains of sand.
"Why did my father never speak of her?" Audrey asked, her voice hushed as if the trees were listening. "My mother’s sister. If she’s a High Priestess, she must be powerful. Why let me suffer in those kitchens for two decades?"
Lucas slowed his horse until he was riding boot-to-boot with her. "Because your mother’s line didn't just carry power, Audrey. They carried the 'Origin Flame.' Your father, Terren, didn't want a partner; he wanted a battery. When your mother realized he intended to use her soul to fuel his expansion of the Moon Shadow borders, she fled. But she was pregnant with you. She made a deal with the Great Council to hide your power until your twenty-first birthday, hoping you’d be safe."
Audrey’s grip tightened on the reins. "Safe? I was a slave."
"She underestimated Terren’s cruelty," Lucas said, his jaw tightening. "He couldn't kill you because of the prophecy, so he tried to break you instead. He thought if he crushed your spirit, the White Wolf would never wake up. He was wrong."
Suddenly, the horses whinnied, rearing back in terror. From the mist ahead, the path simply... vanished. In its place stood a wall of towering pines, their branches intertwined like skeletal fingers. There was no way through.
"We’ve reached the threshold," Vane whispered, her hand going to her throat. "The Grove is rejecting us."
"It’s not rejecting us," Audrey said, a strange sensation washing over her. It wasn't fear; it was a pull, like a needle to a magnet. She dismounted before Lucas could stop her.
"Audrey, wait!"
She walked toward the wall of trees. As she approached, the golden light beneath her skin began to glow, not with the violent flare of a sun, but with a soft, rhythmic pulse. She reached out and placed her hand on the bark of the central tree.
Sister-kin, a voice whispered in her mind. It sounded like a thousand leaves rustling at once. The daughter of the star-lost. Prove your heart.
"I am Audrey of the Solar Eclipse," she said aloud, her voice ringing through the silent forest. "I seek the Priestess. Not for a crown, but for the blood that binds me to a monster."
The trees shivered. Slowly, agonizingly, the massive trunks began to groan and shift, sliding across the earth to reveal a hidden path. But the path wasn't made of dirt; it was made of pure, white moonlight that glowed even in the shadows.
"Only the Luna can enter first," Lucas said, stepping off his horse. He looked at Vane. "Set up a perimeter. If the Black Guard or the Council Arbiters show their faces, give them no quarter."
"Alpha," Vane nodded, her expression grim but respectful.
Lucas turned to Audrey and offered his hand. "Ready?"
"With you? Always," she replied.
As they stepped onto the glowing path, the world behind them disappeared. They were standing in a cathedral of nature. Massive lilies the size of shields bloomed in the dark, and the air was filled with floating embers of gold light.
In the center of the grove sat a small stone cottage, and standing before it was a woman who looked so much like Audrey it made her heart stop. She was older, her long hair a shock of pure white, but her eyes held the same golden fire.
"You took your time, little spark," the woman said, a sad smile touching her lips. "I am Selene. And you... you look just like your mother before the shadows took her."
Audrey took a step forward, but Selene held up a hand.
"Don't come closer yet. The Blood-Link Samantha used has left a trail of rot in your spirit. If you bring it into this house, the Grove will burn." Selene looked at Lucas, her gaze piercing. "And you, King of Silver. You brought her here knowing the price. To break a Blood-Link, a sacrifice of equivalent value must be made. Are you prepared to give up what the ritual demands?"
Lucas didn't hesitate. He stepped in front of Audrey, his shadow long and protective. "Take whatever you need from me. My blood, my strength, my rank. Just save her."
Selene shook her head. "The ritual doesn't want your strength, Lucas. It wants your bond. To scrub her soul clean of her father's touch, I must sever every magical connection she has. Including the one she has with you. If I do this, she will forget the last month. She will forget the marriage, the rescue... and she will forget you."
The silence that followed was deafening. Audrey looked at Lucas, horror dawning on her face. To save her life, she would lose the only person who had ever truly loved her.
"No," Audrey whispered. "There has to be another way."
"The shadows are already at your throat, Audrey," Selene said, pointing to the black veins beginning to creep up Audrey's neck. "Decide. Life without memory, or a slow death in his arms."
