Chapter 8 – Welcome to A New World
Elena’s POV
I answered the question the way I knew best. I remembered everything I had read—folklore, myths, old stories that danced on the edge of fantasy and truth. In most of those tales, witches were described in two lights—good witches, who healed and protected, and dark witches, who thrived in chaos and fed on fear.
I began to write.
But then... something strange happened.
I felt this pull, like an invisible string tying me to that question. My hand began to move on its own, almost like I was no longer in control. I watched in quiet shock as symbols and words I didn’t even recognize flowed from my pen. Words I had never seen before. Sentences that felt ancient… powerful… forbidden.
It was as if I had met a witch before—as if I was remembering something I didn’t even know I had forgotten.
I blinked, staring at the ink now sprawled across my answer sheet. What… what did I just write?
I quickly turned to the previous pages, scanning through everything I had written. Relief washed over me for a moment—I had answered nearly all the questions. But then I paused.
There was one question I had somehow missed.
I frowned. Wait... what? I could have sworn I had answered everything. I checked again.
No doubt.
This question wasn’t there before.
Question 12: Are you afraid of witches?
I stared at it in disbelief. The letters seemed to shimmer faintly, like silver dust had been sprinkled across the page. My hands trembled. This wasn’t normal. This wasn’t even part of the original exam paper. I knew that. My heart pounded louder in my ears.
I glanced up quickly to see if anyone else was reacting—someone raising a hand, looking confused, panicking like I was. But the hall was completely silent.
Too silent.
Were they even seeing what I was seeing?
Or was I the only one?
My breath caught in my throat. I looked back down. The question was still there. I had no choice but to answer it.
Answer: Not really. With my description of what witches are like, I’m not scared of them. But I still believe most of them are dangerous, while others may be friendly. I’m not sure which kind I’ll meet… if ever.
I placed my pen down, trying to calm myself.
But then something happened that made my blood run cold.
Right there, across the bottom of my answer sheet, new words began to form—without my hand moving.
The ink swirled on its own, shaping into thick, bold letters. It was like something—or someone—was writing back to me.
WELCOME TO A NEW WORLD
I gasped and pushed my seat back slightly. My eyes widened in disbelief. I rubbed the paper, thinking maybe it was an illusion, a trick of tired eyes.
But no—the words remained.
Big. Bold. Unshakable.
I sat frozen, my thoughts spinning. What did that even mean? A new world? Was it a hidden message? A sign? A warning?
That’s when Professor Edna’s voice cut through the silence like a sharp blade.
“Time’s up,” she said.
I jerked upright in shock. But what truly terrified me… was when I looked around.
The room was empty.
Every seat was vacant.
The papers were gone.
Even Ana was nowhere in sight.
“Wha…t?” I whispered aloud.
Had I been here longer than I thought?
Had time passed differently for me?
I grabbed my answer sheet, rushed forward, and placed it on Professor Edna’s desk. She didn’t say a word. She just looked at me with a knowing, unreadable expression.
I stepped back, heart pounding in my chest. I could barely feel my legs.
What just happened?
How long had I been there?
And what exactly had I written?
