Chapter 10: The City Takes Sides!

1033 Words
Elena’s POV: Dawn Los Angeles looked different at dawn. Quieter. Sharper. Like the city itself was holding its breath. Elena stood by the window, phone in her hand, rereading the message Dominic had sent hours earlier. You’re not alone in this anymore. She hadn’t replied. Not because she didn’t want to, but because accepting that truth changed the rules. And Elena never stepped into new territory without understanding the cost. Her phone buzzed again. Clara. “Elena,” she said breathlessly, “Ryan’s email is everywhere. Journalists are calling it a leak. Some are calling it retaliation.” “Good,” Elena replied calmly. “Truth survives daylight.” “But donors are split.” “They always are before clarity.” Elena ended the call and turned back to the city. Ryan had crossed the final line. Not just professionally. Personally. He had weaponized trust. And that meant there would be consequences. Ryan’s POV: Morning Ryan’s phone wouldn’t stop ringing. Journalists. Lawyers. Board members who had once shaken his hand and smiled. Now, silence or fury. “What do you mean investigation?” he snapped into the phone. The lawyer’s voice was clipped. “You released confidential information without authorization. There are privacy violations. Defamation risks.” Ryan’s chest tightened. “She deserved it.” “That’s not a legal defense,” the lawyer replied. “And neither is jealousy.” The line went dead. Ryan sank into the couch, breathing hard. This wasn’t how it was supposed to go. Vanessa had promised control. Leverage. Victory. Instead, he felt exposed. Alone. His phone buzzed again. Vanessa. He hesitated, then answered. Vanessa’s POV: Morning “Do you understand what you’ve done?” Vanessa said coldly. Ryan swallowed. “I helped us.” “You helped yourself,” she snapped. “You acted without permission.” “I was desperate!” “Yes,” she replied sharply, “and desperation makes people disposable.” The word hit him harder than he expected. “You said” “I said be careful,” Vanessa interrupted. “You weren’t.” Ryan’s voice shook. “They’re investigating me.” Vanessa leaned back in her chair, eyes distant. “Then you’ll need to be very convincing.” “Vanessa” The line went dead. Vanessa set the phone aside, jaw tight. Ryan was unraveling faster than expected. Fine, she thought. Then we move to phase two. Dominic’s POV: Mid-Morning Dominic Blackwood did not raise his voice. He didn’t need to. The room was silent as his legal team reviewed the documents Ryan had leaked. “This is enough,” one lawyer said. “Civil and criminal exposure.” “And Vanessa?” Dominic asked. “Circumstantial,” another replied. “But patterns are emerging.” Dominic nodded once. “Proceed.” “With… everything?” “Yes.” Marcus hesitated. “You’re choosing a side now.” Dominic met his gaze. “No. I already did.” He picked up his phone and finally sent the message he’d been holding back. I’m stepping in. Publicly. Elena’s POV: Late Morning The message arrived while Elena was reviewing the audit results. She read it once. Then again. Her breath slowed. I’m stepping in. Publicly. She typed, paused, erased. Then finally replied: Then we do this clean. Almost immediately: Always. Elena closed her eyes briefly. So this was what it felt like, not to be rescued, but to be backed. She straightened and turned to Clara. “Prepare a press release.” “Response?” “No,” Elena said softly. “Revelation.” Press Conference, Dominic & Elena The cameras flashed wildly. Reporters shouted questions before either of them spoke. Dominic stepped forward first. “The Blackwood Group has initiated a formal investigation into the illegal dissemination of private information connected to the Hart Foundation.” Gasps. Elena followed, voice steady. “We are also releasing a full independent audit of the foundation’s finances. Nothing hidden. Nothing redacted.” A reporter shouted, “Is this about Ryan Hart?” Elena didn’t hesitate. “Yes.” Another voice: “And Vanessa Cole?” Dominic answered calmly. “All involved parties will be addressed.” The city listened. And chose. Ryan’s POV: Afternoon Ryan watched the press conference from his darkened apartment, hands shaking. “They’re destroying me,” he whispered. His phone buzzed again. Unknown number. “This is Detective Harris. We’d like to ask you a few questions regarding the release of confidential documents.” Ryan’s heart dropped. “When?” he croaked. “Now would be preferable.” The knock came minutes later. Ryan didn’t run. He couldn’t. Vanessa’s POV: Afternoon Vanessa stood at her window, watching the city move as news alerts lit up her phone. Dominic Blackwood Steps In Illegal Leak Under Investigation Ryan Hart Questioned Her fingers tightened around the glass. “So,” she murmured, “you made it public.” Her assistant hesitated nearby. “Should we respond?” Vanessa smiled slowly. “No,” she said. “We adapt.” Her eyes darkened. “Elena thinks this is the end.” She turned. “It’s just the part where things get ugly.” Dominic’s POV: Evening Dominic found Elena alone in the foundation office as night settled. “You didn’t have to do this,” she said quietly. “Yes,” he replied. “I did.” She looked at him then, not guarded, not distant. Honest. “You’re changing the balance,” she said. “So are you.” A pause. Elena spoke softly. “People will assume things.” Dominic smiled faintly. “Let them.” Their gazes held longer than necessary. Neither stepped back. Elena’s POV: Night Later, alone again, Elena reviewed the final document on her tablet. Ryan Hart, Formal Charges Pending She felt no joy. Only closure. She set the tablet down and looked at the city. “I survived you,” she whispered. “Twice.” Her phone buzzed one last time. Dominic: Dinner still stands. Elena smiled. “Yes,” she typed back. It does. Outside, Los Angeles adjusted, quietly, inevitably, to new power lines. And Elena Hart stood exactly where she belonged. At the center.
