I pass a bowl of salad to Ariel and she mouths a soft “thank you,” her eye holds mine for a split second before I turn away. “And where’d you learn to fight like that?” Carlos asks. I guess he’s talking about how I handled him the last time. I set down my fork and wipe my mouth. “Training.” I keep my response short, glancing at my plate. But then I add, “And… I apologize for what happened earlier.” I meet Carlos’ gaze. Victoria’s face lights up, too bright, too eager, like she’s about to ask me for something. “He has forgiven you! You’re his nephew, of course he has!” She says and I…I am confused. Why is she smiling? She looks like she is about to ask me for something. “And why are you buttering him up?”
