The last bus home. Episode 3

Chapter Eighteen: Shifting Seasons Three years had passed since Araba’s birth. Life had settled into a rhythm, soft and certain. Kwame’s eco-homes dotted the outskirts of Accra, and Diana’s agency now mentored young creatives across Ghana. But peace has its own way of testing love. It started with Diana’s invitation to a global creative summit—in Tokyo. "It’s only for six weeks," she said, tucking Araba into bed. Kwame raised his eyebrows. "Only? We’ve never spent more than a week apart." Diana exhaled. "I know. But this could change everything. I need to do this—for me." He nodded slowly. "Then we’ll make it work." Chapter Nineteen: Distance and Depth Time zones turned affection into scheduling. Diana’s morning texts became Kwame’s midnight comfort. Araba would hold the phone to her cheek during video calls. "Mommy, come kiss me through the screen." Kwame held it all together. School drop-offs, dinner, bedtime stories, client meetings. But some nights, the quiet apartment echoed too loudly. Meanwhile, Diana stood on Tokyo stages, receiving standing ovations. Yet the ache of absence was constant. She began drawing tulips on napkins again. Tiny reminders of home. Chapter Twenty: Letters Between Lovers They started writing letters—handwritten, mailed the old way. One arrived smelling of cinnamon and ink. Diana wrote: "I miss the way you hum in the mornings. Araba tells me you burned the pancakes. Twice. I smiled so wide it hurt. I love you. Always." Kwame’s reply came a week later: "I miss your voice in the kitchen. Araba says I talk in my sleep. I think I say your name. I love you too. Even more." Chapter Twenty-One: Return and Revelations When Diana stepped off the plane, Araba ran into her arms. Kwame followed, quiet. When their eyes met, something raw passed between them. "You look tired," she said. "I was waiting for you." "I’m here now." They embraced, holding each other like the days had folded into a blink. Chapter Twenty-Two: A House of Tulips They moved into the home Kwame had designed years ago—a whitewashed haven just outside the city, with a garden of real tulips. Diana set up her home office. Kwame installed a writing nook beside her desk. They painted the nursery again. Araba insisted on yellow walls. Weekends became sacred—picnics, storytelling, music. Diana taught Araba to bake. Kwame taught her to draw. One evening, Araba asked, "Is this what love looks like?" Diana smiled. "Yes. It grows where people choose each other every day." Chapter Twenty-Three: Branches and Roots The couple launched a joint foundation: Tulip Initiatives—offering mentorship, design skills, and storytelling workshops for underserved youth. They traveled to remote villages, taught in community centers, and funded mini libraries. "We’re building more than homes and ads," Kwame said at a press event. "We’re planting futures." Chapter Twenty-Four: Stormclouds Return One rainy evening, Araba fell ill. High fever. Uncontrollable cough. A rush to the hospital. Three days of uncertainty. Diana barely left her bedside. Kwame stayed in the hallway, praying aloud. "Please," he whispered. "I can’t lose her." When the fever broke, relief washed over them like grace. "She’s strong," the doctor said. "Just like her parents." Chapter Twenty-Five: Full Circle, Again On the fifth anniversary of their wedding, Diana surprised Kwame with a framed map. The same one he gave her before London. But now, it was updated. A new garden drawn. A treehouse. Araba’s tulip scribbles etched into the corners. "You gave me home," she said. Kwame kissed her hand. "You gave me forever." Epilogue III: The Last Bus Never Leaves They visited the terminal again, now a bustling hub turned historical landmark. The bench where they first met had a small plaque now: "Where the journey began. Diana & Kwame – Love, 2017." A stranger sat there, soaked in rain, checking her phone. Diana whispered to Kwame, "Think she missed her bus?" Kwame grinned. "Maybe she’s just waiting for her story to begin." And so, the bus of love never truly leaves. It simply waits for those brave enough to sit through the rain. The End – Episode III
