Melissa's POV
I fluttered my eyes open to see a blurry figure in front of me. My head was throbbing, and my
body felt heavy.
“She's becoming conscious.” I heard a voice say. It sounded close, but so distant.
“Melissa, can you hear me? Melissa?”
I opened my eyes and caught a glimpse of Lucas sitting in front of me. Kyra stood by
his side also.
As I gazed at them, my memories came rushing back.
“How could you?” I asked him calmly. I was surprised at the level of composure I could express
as opposed to the level of wrath in me.
Lucas stared at the floor in shame. He ought to feel more than that.
“I'm sorry you had to find out this way. I was going to, sorry, we were going to tell you,” he
answered. I chortled in disbelief.
I sat up on the couch and glanced around to realize I was still in his place. The circumstance
leading to that very scenario came rushing back.
I had phoned Lucas to notify him I was arriving at his place, but he informed me he wasn't
home from work yet. I found it unusual seeing it was thirty minutes past his work hours.
Seeing he wasn't going to come back early, I entered the Mall to get some groceries to set up
dinner for him. I strolled into the city's shopping mall and purchased some peas, beef, eggs, and
tomatoes. The rest of the ingredients were at his place, so I didn't bother purchasing them
anymore.
My items were checked out, and I paid before leaving in my 2012 Mazda, a birthday gift from my
parents on my 16th birthday.
I got to Lucas' apartment twenty minutes later. He lived on the third floor of a rental building and I resolved to go up the stairs, instead of the elevator.
I sauntered to his door to see the click on the door wasn't in its place, so I ended up pushing it
open.
The first scenery I saw will forever stay in my memories.
The bags in my hand fell, startling the occupants of the house.
I guess I lost consciousness afterward and that was how I ended up lying on the couch.
“How long has this been going on?” I asked.
“Uhm… A while now.” Lucas responded.
“When is a while? Last month, yesterday, when? I need answers, Lucas,” I said, standing up.
“Melissa calm down, please.”
“Don't tell me to calm down! I want to know how long you've been sleeping with her!” I said,
pointing to Kyra, his so-called colleague at work, who I've walked into multiple times. Not only
that, but I should have suspected they were sleeping together behind my back. How dumb I was
not to notice!
“Face it, he doesn't love you,” Kyra said with hate written all over her face.
I turned to her with a stern look on my face. I didn't want to face her, or I might end up doing
something rash.
“You couldn't even pick a better person to cheat around with. What does she even have?” I
asked Lucas.
“I'm sorry, Mel. I didn't mean to, but I love her.”
“Don't call me Mel. You do love her? Good heavens!” I said bitterly.
“We're getting married soon.” He added.
I almost lost my footing.
“Tell me you're joking.” I searched his eyes to see if he was joking.
“I'm not. We're getting married next month.”
I didn't even know whether to c***k up or burst into tears. I was feeling numerous things, but
pity was beating that list.
“We've dated for three years and during those times, you were skeptical about getting married,”
I told him.
“I was, but not anymore,” he replied.
I laughed. “I was a joke.”
“I'm sorry,”
“Are you sorry because I caught you, or because I had to find out like this?”
“He said he's sorry, why can't you just let it go?” Kyra said annoyingly.
I would rather not say anything to her, but she was straining my patience.
“I trusted you. I loved you. What didn't I do for you? What, Lucas?” I yelled, already loosing my composure.
“Calm down, you don't want the neighbors to hear, do you?” He asked.
“Are you that ashamed that you don't want them to hear? I want them to know how disgusting
you are. I sacrificed everything for you.”
“Maybe it wasn't enough. I want more and you aren't it.”
The fact that Lucas wasn't indicating any remorse was what hurt me. I didn't realize he always
felt that way about me. My mind drifted to when we met.
Lucas and I met each other on the way out of the movies. I was tying my shoelaces when
someone tapped me from behind. Likewise, I turned around and there he was, in a black T-shirt
and black pants. He had a smile on his face as he gave me my scarf, which had fallen out of my
bag. I thanked him and made to leave, but he asked for my number. I obliged at first but went
ahead to give it to him. We went on a date three days later and the rest, they say, is history. A
bad one at that.
“Why didn't you call things off instead of cheating on me?” He had no answer to that.
“I feel like a fool,” I said, pacing the room. Kyra muttered something inaudible under her breath.
“What did you say?” I asked, marching towards her, but Lucas drew me back.
“Melissa, please.”
“Do not touch me with your filthy hands. Cheating bastard!” I cursed angrily.
“Can she leave already? She's making a lot of noise.” Kyra said.
“Melissa, please go home. I apologized already. Get over it.” Lucas said.
I couldn't believe he just said that.
“Did you ever love me??” I questioned.
“I did, but you can't deny that we're no match together.”
“What do you mean we're no match together? We came to terms with many things, and we rarely
had fights, until recently.”
“I can't be with you. You have a child whose father you have no idea of.”
“What are you saying?” I didn't want to assume it was what I thought. When we first met, I told
him I had a son, and he told me he was cool with it. How wrong I was! Seemed I was wrong about
so many things lately.
“I'm saying I can't father another man's child.” He confessed.
