A NEW BEGINNING

I stared at my apartment, realizing it was time to leave it all behind. Everything it held was just part of my past now. Honk! Honk! The taxi driver honked impatiently, snapping me out of my thoughts. I locked up quickly and rushed out with a bunch of boxes. The driver helped me load them into the trunk, and then we were off to Tampa International Airport. "We made it right on time," I whispered to myself as we pulled up. I checked in, went through security, and followed all the rules. Finally, it was time to board the plane. After a long journey, I finally settled into my new place. “Phew," I sighed, feeling exhausted. I have been unpacking and arranging everything for over three hours straight, not taking any breaks. I wouldn’t feel relaxed if my new home wasn’t put together to my taste. I collapsed onto my bed, but sleep eluded me. I had too much on my mind, especially finding a job. "Next up, job hunting," I said to myself, trying to stay motivated. I knew I had to start looking if I wanted to keep this nice apartment and my car. I scrolled through job sites for hours, feeling frustrated by how tough it was to find something in New York. But then, something caught my eye— a job offer as a personal assistant at Smith's Enterprise. I quickly updated my resume and applied for the job, along with a couple of others. At least today's effort wasn't a waste of time. "I hope one of these works out," I whispered, sending up a little prayer for good luck. I was dead tired, right from my skin to the marrow of my bones. Today's work drained me completely, and I badly needed sleep. I crawled into bed, grabbed my phone, and thought about calling Nana to let her know I was settled. But I was too tired for a chat, so I just dropped the phone and dozed off. The next day, I woke to the ringing on my phone. I eyed my phone not wanting to pick the call. “Hello," I answered reluctantly. "Hello, this is Audrey from Smith's Enterprise. Are you Ms. Alexandra Damien?" "Yeah," I answered, suddenly wide awake. “I have noticed you put in an application for us, and we think you’re an outstanding applicant," she said. I was so excited, I couldn’t bring myself to respond. “Would you be able to come in for an interview today?” “Yes I can, what time?” I responded, finally making out words. “Exactly 10 am”. “Perfect, thank you so much!” I ecstatically said. “You’re welcome bye”, she said, hanging up the phone. I squealed with joy. I felt so much excitement, which made me just want to jump around like a man who has just won a lottery. I didn’t have much time, so I needed to dress fast. I rushed towards my closet and scanned my entire clothing looking for a good dress for my interview. I’ve got to dress to impress. I picked up a baby blue pantsuit with a matching jacket, then I paired it up with closed-toe shoes. Finally, I singled out some golden accessories which fit the dress nicely. I parked my car in front of the massive building, then stepped out and locked it. Walking inside, I was struck by the impressive interior of the organization. It looked so professional. Not sure which floor to go to, I asked a random lady. She told me to go to the eighth floor, so I hopped in the elevator. Upon reaching the eighth floor, I stepped out to find a lady behind a desk. “Good morning I’m Ms. Alexandra Damien, and I’m here for an interview," I said. “Okay…” she raised an eyebrow at me as she eyed my clothing curiously. I couldn’t quite read the expression on her face. Was she mocking me? or does she genuinely like my choice of outfit? It made me feel a little nervous. “Maybe I overdressed," I thought to myself. “Do you have an appointment?” “Yes ten o’clock." “Okay I’ll notify Mr. Smith that you’re here," she said, picking up the phone on her desk. I went ahead to take a seat while she made the call. “Mr. Smith is ready to see you," I heard her say. That was quick. She walked me down a hallway. "That's his office," she informed me. "Thank you," I muttered, feeling the nerves creeping in. With a nod, she left me alone. Approaching the door, I knocked, but there was no response. Trying again, still silence. "Should I just go in?" I wondered. Without me thinking what a stupid idea that was, I turned the knob, and the door swung open. Entering the office, I marveled at the decor and the stunning view of NYC through the large windows. I had no idea the city could look this beautiful. Suddenly, the elevator chimed. Oh s**t. Someone was coming. I hurriedly exited the office, but it was too late.
