CHAPTER 40
“Who is she, Lolita? I sensed that she isn’t just a regular servant. She’s something more,” Dina said. “And she has her room with Zonia. You should ask Zonia about it!”
Lolita sighed. Dina’s always curious about things. She can’t shut her mouth when she needed to. “Calm yourself down, Dina. Do not overthink. If that woman is special, Zonia would not say a word about it. Let’s just trust the prince. He’s good at deciding things.”
Dina snorted, crossing her elbows. “You are always like that Lolita! Let things happen, do not think about it. I’m going to die because of curiosity and yet you still want me to shut up.”
“Curiosity will kill you. Besides, her eyes were wonderful, right?” Lolita chuckled.
“And now, you are adoring her? I am your friend, you should side with me.”
Lolita shook her head. Young women, she thought. “I won’t side with you. You’re on the wrong side. You should judge her. Just let the things happen.”
Dina rolled her eyes and stomped her feet away from Lolita. Sometimes she’s a devil, sometimes she’s an angel, she thought. She went alone in the garden. She needed the peace. She needed to be alone.
She sat on the plant box and touched the daisies that the queen had taken care of for years. The queen’s lucky that she can have this kind of garden and have servants who can take care of the flowers. She wished she can be someone’s queen. No, it would be too inappropriate. She’s obnoxious. How can someone like her?
A man behind her tucked his hands on her eyes. She shivered in fear. She can’t see anything but darkness. The hands that where her eyes are hiding were a little bit wet and sweaty.
“Stop! Let go of me! Or I’ll scream that you’re invalidating the rules.”
Slowly, the man behind her removed his hands. Dina turned around to see his face. She was about to hit him with her hand when she saw that it was Veneer and he’s laughing about it. Such a handsome face, how can she lay her hands on it.
“Why did you stop? Punch me. Hurt me,” he said, laughing too hard. His hands wrapped around his abdomen.
“Bastard! How can I punch you if you belong to the royal family? I won’t hurt you and put my life in danger. You’re bestowing me with your rudeness because you’re in a royal family.”
“Is that what you think of me?”
“I praised you and I said a lot of good things about you. I wanted to get it back because I think I said those things too early. Leave me alone, Veneer! Don’t think that you can get me easily just because I had a crush on you.”
“Had?”
“Y-Yes, had. Do you really think that I still have?”
Veneer pulled her shoulders. “If not, stare at me.”
Silence poured between the two of them. Dina can’t speak any words. His eyes were glittering and his face fascinated her. This has to stop!
She pushed her a little bit, crossed her arms, and sat back on the plant box. “Don’t you dare touch me again?”
“I was on my way inside when I saw you here, looking upset. What’s the problem, Dina?” he asked and sat beside her.
Dina shrugged. She wasn’t sure if she should tell this to him but maybe releasing it will make her feel better. “There were two new servants that the prince brought to the queen. I know that another one but the second one is a total stranger. I’m afraid that I’ll totally lose my position as the queen’s personal servant. I was the only one back then and then Lolita became one. I’m afraid that I’ll be worthless to the queen’s eyes. And I’m afraid that I won’t be Lolita’s best friend anymore.”
She faced him and her eyes were swollen red. Tears were about to fall. No, they fell without her noticing it.
Veneer leaned to her. He thought wrapping his hands around her will make things easier and lighter for her. She was a mad stone on the outside but has a soft pillow-like heart on the inside.
“Shh, don’t cry. Smile and think about positive things. The queen will still love you. Lolita will stay by your side.” He cupped her face and kissed her forehead.
She was shocked when he did that. What’s the purpose of that? Why did he do that? But that kiss, made her feel more comforted, made her feel better. She pressed his face on his chest and let the tears flow like a meteor shower.
