CHAPTER 48 Another set of servants entered the palace. Dina felt the feeling that she feels every time a new group of servants entered the palace and served the royal people. These sets weren’t primarily for the queen, but they can help her as well. Afraid and agitation filled her lungs. She hoped she won’t be replaced in the hearts of the people she adored Lolita and Queen Amira. She didn’t want to feel hopeless again. She sat on her bed and lay down. She thought before that being alone in a room was a benefit in the palace. But no, it wasn’t. She’s alone right now, and Lolita might be enjoying talking to the new set of servants. She might be replacing her right now. Stop overthinking, she thought. Lolita promised her that she’ll stay by her side whatever happens. But she’s afraid that she breaks her promise just like what her parents did to her. Dina was their only daughter before her mother gave birth to another when she was fifteen. They said she’s the most beautiful baby in the palace, which they also told her when she was younger. Her parents enjoyed their new baby, and even if she’s just fourteen, she was sent to the palace of Caspian to serve the royal people. She was so down that time. And the only person that picked her up was the queen. The queen appreciated her so much and treated her like a precious gem. She said she didn’t have a princess and she’ll be her princess. A servant but a princess. She smiled. She was happy. And that moment didn’t occur again. Her tears voluntarily came out from her eyes. Why is she crying again She should be Dina, the most demanding and most obnoxious servant in the whole palace. Other servants were afraid to approach her because she’s the queen’s favorite before. Loud knocks banged through her door. She wiped the tears on her eyes and cooled herself down. She didn’t want anyone to see that she cried, that she lose herself because she’s overthinking. She stood up, opened the door. Lola was there with a smile on her face. “Dina, older sister was looking for you. She said that there’s a celebration in the dining with new servants. She said I should check on you because you might be sick. Are you okay, Dina” “I’m good,” she lied. She wasn’t. She just cried before Lola knocked on her door. “I’m going to come. I just rested because I didn’t get enough sleep last night.” She went out of her room and closed the door. “Let’s go.” Lola locked her arms to Dina’s. “There’s a servant who’s clever like my older sister. She talks a lot about her past and life, and everyone seemed to like her.” Everyone seemed to like her. The sentence repeated in her mind. She was the opposite since everyone seemed to hate her. Why can’t she be likable like other servants Was it because she’s constantly harsh to other people Lola said her name when they entered the dining room. Everyone seemed to be upset when she arrived. She read their minds, and they seemed they thought why she was here. Lola sat beside her sister. The only empty chair was beside Sphyra, and she didn’t have a choice but to sit there. She wanted to sit beside Lolita, but she wasn’t the decision. “Do you know when I climbed up the hill, I called my mother from there She got mad and chased me to the woods. I ran so fast, but she’s faster. When she caught me, she s*****d me so hard with a stick. My butt hurts for a few days because of that.” Everyone laughed at this new servant. Dina can’t help but look at the flowers displayed on the table. “Are you okay” Sphyra whispered to her. No one noticed it. They were busy laughing with this new girl. “Everyone laughed at Ruth’s joke but you.” She shook her head. Ruth wasn’t the problem, the flowers weren’t the problem, she is the problem. “Nothing.” “If you didn’t like to stay in a place because you don’t like the topic or the people you are with, just find some flowers and stare at it.” She didn’t know why Sphyra was giving her advice. She was rude to her as always, yet she’s the one helping her. Why look at the flowers What is remarkable within the flowers She didn’t know either, but she stared at the flowers. So her name is Ruth, she thought. She didn’t mind the laugh of the people around her, but she got calmer when Sphyra rubbed her back. Why was she doing this Why was she making her feel better They weren’t friends, and they weren’t on good terms. But she liked it. It felt like she’s Lolita, the one who took care of her when she was sick despite her feverish attitude. She can’t take it anymore even though her eyes were locked on the flowers. She needed more flowers to calm down. She needed to leave. She stood up. “Where are you going, Dina” Lolita asked, smiling. “Queen Amira said that I should go to her at this time,” she lied. Lolita nodded, and she let her go. She let her go, she repeated. She didn’t stop her from staying for a moment. She let her go. She trudged to the door, to the garden. There, her tears burst like a flash flood. Was she losing her friends one by one Was she losing the people that she adores, that adores her She should have brought a towel or any clothing that can wipe up her tears. She stared at the flowers, daisies, jasmine, tulips, and many more. It calmed her down. Silence. Silence. Silence. And a man’s scream from her back. She was startled and was about to hit the man who shocked her whole body. Veneer. Again. “Why are you crying again” he asked and sat beside He shouldn’t ask more, she thought. She wasn’t ready to share it with other people. “Not your business.” She picked up the stone near her foot and threw it as far as she can. It bounced like a ball. She sniffed; she smelled Veneer’s perfume that can define him as the sweetest man in the royal palace. “You know you can tell me. We’re friends, right” “We are never friends. I never told you that we’re friends.” “That is what you want, and that’s what I’m feeling. So we’re friends.” She faced him, stared at his sulky black hair and tiny head. She wanted to pinch his puffy cheeks, but she didn’t feel that so good. “It’s just nothing but me overthinking again.” “About Lolita and Queen Amira” She nodded. “I told you the two of you will still remain the best of best friends. And the queen still likes you because you’re still her personal servant. Don’t overthink too much.” “That’s it. That’s why I am crying. What if the queen tells me that I am no longer her personal servant What if, each day, Lolita will be more distant from me and she and that Ruth will become the new best of best friends I don’t want to lose that I earned from them.” Veneer placed his hands on Dina’s right shoulders and pulled her towards him. He used his hand to lean Dina’s head on his shoulders. Dina wanted to escape from the position, but it somehow managed to make her feel better. “If you lose their love to you, I am very much willing to love you more than what they made you feel.” Veneer’s words. It struck her heart, melting it. He wasn’t just a playful fool. He’s also full of wisdom like her father and grandfather. He truly belongs to the royal family and to her heart. “I don’t want you to do that, Veneer. I don’t want you to force you to love me.” She collapsed from her new favorite position leaning to Veneer’s shoulder. She stood up, letting her back stare at Veneer. “I don’t want a forced love. But thank you for making me feel better.” She walked away from him, but she stopped when she heard him stood up. “I didn’t force my love to you. It just happened. And it’s still happening.”
