For three years since she was sixteen, Lolita had been a servant in the palace. She’s lucky that she’s a servant in a royal palace not to any rich man whom she didn’t want to serve. If there’s a hierarchy in the palace, her position would be one of the lowest. She’s just a servant, not a personal servant of a king, a queen, or a prince.
She can say that she’s the favorite cook of the queen. Whenever there’s a guest, she’s the one who’s assigned to cook food for them. The queen always requests her meat stew or any soup. She respected the queen so much and her family since the day they helped his father and mother to have a job.
Her family needed a job. For her older brother, Leon, who’s wanted to become a solider. If Leon would be successful in being a soldier, their family wouldn’t be below the poverty line. They were all helping him in achieving his dreams. Her mother was sewing dresses to sell, her father who harvest goods from the Garden of Pleas, and Lola, her sister, who’s also a servant in the royal palace.
All of their earnings would be given to Leon to help him to become a soldier. They thought he’s the hope of the family, who would let them eat delicious meal and wear fabulous clothing in the future. And someone what will help them to rise from poverty.
There were three ways to become rich in the system of the palace. First, being a soldier. Soldiers were given a high pay unlike those who were working in agriculture and servants. Second, you have to do something heroic for the palace. A reward for those who became a hero in palace is incomparable to any of the salary that the people were earning. Lastly is marrying a soldier, a rich person, or someone who has a position. Even though they’re only a concubine, they will earn money which was more than thrice of their salary. Lolita wanted to do the right way, help his brother in becoming a soldier. She knew that hard work will pay off.
She went to the kitchen of the palace where she had prepared the ingredients for the soup that she’s going to cook. Corn soup, easy, but she had to be excellent in cooking it. It is for the Queen Dowager, mother of the current king.
She had cooked corn soup countless times before. It felt that she’s a newbie every time that she’s going to cook it for someone who has a position. She had seen the Queen Dowager when she’s younger and the time she stepped into the palace. The Queen Dowager’s current health was poor and it looked like she’s waiting for her death to come.
While waiting for the corn soup to be cooked, she prepared the ingredients that she’ll be using for later’s meal. She’d been doing this so she won’t waste time, making her one of the favorites of the Queen.
Five minutes after, the corn soup was already cooked. She got some on an ugly bowl for her to taste it. Great, hopefully the Queen Dowager would like it.
She prepared a three-fourth corn soup on a much royal bowl for the Queen Dowager. She had put four bowls on a tray. She knew the Prince and the King Dowager were there and they might also like the hot corn soup.
As she went out of the kitchen, she saw Queen Amira’s personal servant Dina along with the other personal servants of the King’s family. They were usually the higher ones and they said they were the best.
Knowing that they’re rude, Lolita walked pass through them, not minding their dirty looks on her.
“Wait!” She knew it was Dina’s voice. She stopped, not looking from her back. She heard footsteps coming through her direction.
She faced them. Four faces of wicked servants.
“Is there something I can do for the Queen? Does the Queen have any requests?”
They all shrugged. Dina sniffed the smoke coming from the soup that Lolita had prepared.
“Is that a corn soup?”
Lolita nodded.
“Can we have them? You know we’re really hungry serving our bosses and they said that you cook great.”
“No,” she said firmly.
The four wicked servants gazed at each other. How can this woman disrespect them?
“Oh, why? Can’t you share the corn soup the you had prepared?” said another servant.
“This is specially requested by Prince Aragorn for the Queen Dowager. Sorry, but I can’t give these to you.”
She let her back faced the four woman. She didn’t have time to talk or explain to them. The Queen Dowager and the Prince must be waiting for this. She was about to step away from them when Dina pulled her back.
“We’re not finished and you’re facing your back on us. You’re disrespectful!”
Lolita faced them again, in a much serious face. She didn’t answer, just staring at them.
“We also heard that you’re praised by one of the prince’s companions. Do you think that you’re higher than us just because you were praised?” Dina screamed. She’s one of the most powerful servant in the place since she’s the queen’s favorite and all other servants were sticking on to her to gain connection. “Since you didn’t want us to taste your corn soup, we’re going to get it to you.”
Dina and the other woman tried to pull the tray of corn soup to Lolita. But Lolita used her legs to kick them away.
Dina hugged her swelling stomach after being kicked by Lolita. They took steps away from her while their eyes were raging and they were grinning their teeth.
“You’re going to pay for this. I will tell this to the Queen.”
“Do it! Or you’ll be kicked in the palace. You’re also a servant just like me. Even though there’s a majority of the four of you, the prince and the prince’s companion will witness and is on my side. What will the queen will believe? Her petty servant or her one and only son?”
“Bastard! I’ll make you pay for this.”
“In the royal palace, we’re serving the king’s family and there’s no place I will serve a wicked woman like you. I have to go now. The Queen Dowager and the Prince must be waiting for my delicious soup.”
Lolita let her back face the four of them and smirked while walking her way to the room of the Queen Dowager.
Not that away from the scene, Hideo smiled and chuckled. She’s really extraordinary.
