Chapter 10 : Fallen

The team’s laughter and chatter slowly faded as the final moments of the teambuilding event drew to a close. Inside the spacious van, the atmosphere was a mix of exhaustion and contentment. Veronica took a deep breath, feeling a sense of camaraderie that had grown over the day. She knew this was more than just a team outing—it was a step toward stronger bonds. As Veronica approached the van, Celine gently reached out and held her hand, stopping her in her tracks. Celine’s eyes shimmered with a mixture of curiosity and concern. “Would you sit with us in the van, Veronica? With all of TL?” Celine asked softly, a hopeful tone in her voice. Veronica smiled kindly, gently removing Celine’s hand from hers. “Thanks, Celine, but I’d like to sit with my team for a while. I think we need some time to bond more, you know?” Celine’s brow furrowed slightly, but she nodded, understanding Veronica’s intentions. However, her eyes flicked over to Lyka, who was standing a few steps away. Lyka’s gaze was sharp and intense, her eyes narrowing slightly as she watched Veronica closely. Lyka’s stare was almost intimidating, a silent warning of the jealousy simmering beneath her calm exterior. Veronica caught the look and felt a flicker of sympathy—she knew Lyka’s feelings were complicated, and she didn’t want to cause any unnecessary tension. Veronica offered a warm smile to Celine again. “Thanks for asking. I’ll catch up with you all later, I promise.” Celine hesitated for a moment, then nodded again, her expression a mix of understanding and unspoken concern. She released Veronica’s hand gently and stepped back, allowing her to move toward her team. Veronica took a deep breath and stepped into the van, choosing a seat near her teammates. She looked out the window, feeling the warmth of the setting sun on her face and the faint glances exchanged among her friends. She knew that tonight was about building trust and connection with her team—something that, at least for now, she wanted to focus on. Meanwhile, Lyka watched Veronica carefully, her jaw clenched but her eyes softening just a little as she realized Veronica’s intentions. The road ahead was uncertain, but for now, they would see where the journey took them. Veronica hesitated for a moment, then gently settled herself beside Lyka in the van. As she slid into the seat, Lyka’s eyes flicked toward her, and without a word, Veronica reached out secretly, taking Lyka’s hand in hers. Their fingers intertwined softly, a quiet gesture of comfort and connection amidst the quiet hum of the vehicle. The road stretched ahead as the van moved smoothly through the evening. Both Veronica and Lyka leaned back, their eyes fluttering shut, exhausted from the day’s activities and their emotional exchanges. The gentle rocking of the van lulled them into a light sleep, hands still clasped tightly. Suddenly, the driver’s voice broke the silence. “We’ve arrived at the drop-off point. Everyone, please prepare to disembark.” The van slowed and finally came to a stop. The team began to stir, stretching and exchanging tired but satisfied smiles. One by one, they filed out of the van, their footsteps fading into the evening air. Veronica and Lyka remained seated for a moment longer, sharing a peaceful silence. As Veronica carefully eased herself out of the van, Lyka reluctantly opened her eyes, her gaze lingering on Veronica’s face before she finally stretched and got up. They started walking together, side by side, their footsteps light but steady. As they approached Veronica’s motorcycle, Krisha and Karina hurried over, their expressions cheerful. “Hey! Are you guys hungry? Want to grab something to eat before heading home?” Krisha asked, her eyes twinkling with mischief. Veronica looked at Lyka, then back at Krisha and Karina. “Do you want to come with us?” she asked, a warm smile on her face. Lyka nodded without hesitation. “Yes, I’d love to.” As Veronica and Lyka held hands—an unspoken promise of closeness—they strolled toward the motorcycle. Krisha and Karina exchanged knowing glances, both smirking subtly as they watched Veronica and Lyka walk together. The evening air was filled with a mix of tiredness and unspoken anticipation. Despite the exhaustion, a spark of something new flickered between Veronica and Lyka, hinting that perhaps this day was just the beginning of something deeper. Inside the small fast food place, only Veronica, Lyka, Krisha, and Karina were sitting together, enjoying their meal. The atmosphere was relaxed, filled with light conversation and smiles as they ate. Veronica and Lyka sat close, sharing occasional glances and subtle smiles, their hands brushing lightly at times. Krisha and Karina watched them with amused smirks but kept the conversation casual. Suddenly, Lyka’s phone buzzed on the table. She glanced at the screen and her expression changed to one of concern. Without much delay, she excused herself quickly. “Sorry, guys, I have to go home now,” Lyka said hurriedly. “My mom just texted me. She needs me to check on her at home right away.” Veronica looked worried. “Are you sure? Do you want us to come with you?” Lyka forced a small, reassuring smile. “No, it’s okay. I t’s just a quick thing. I’ll be back soon. Thanks for understanding.” Krisha and Karina nodded supportively. “Drive safely, Lyka,” Krisha said gently. Lyka nodded again and hurried outside, leaving Veronica and the others behind. Veronica watched her go, concern evident in her eyes. She hoped everything was alright with Lyka’s mom. As Lyka hurried out of the fast food place, Krisha and Karina watched her go, exchanging amused glances. Their eyes then shifted to Veronica, who seemed a bit distracted, her gaze lingering on the door. Krisha nudged Karina playfully and whispered, “Hey, Veronica, are you okay? You look a little worried. Did you fall for Lyka?” Karina chuckled softly and added with a teasing smile, “Yeah, what’s going on? Planning some revenge on her ? Veronica blushed slightly, trying to hide her embarrassment. She quickly shook her head and laughed nervously. “What? No! I’m just… just thinking about something. Lyka’s fine, I’m sure. It’s just… I guess I was a little worried about her.” Krisha grinned mischievously, “Uh-huh, worried about her, or worried you’re falling for her?” Karina winked, “Come on, Veronica, you can’t deny it’s obvious. You’re totally into her.” Veronica straightened up, crossing her arms with a confident smile. “No, I’m not falling for her,” she declared proudly. “I still have my revenge plan, remember? Krisha and Karina looked at each other, smirking knowingly. Krisha nudged Karina and whispered teasingly, “Really? That’s what you’re telling yourself? Come on, Veronica, you don’t have to be so stubborn.” Karina giggled. “Yeah, you say so, but we all see the way you look at her. You’re totally smitten.” Veronica rolled her eyes but felt her cheeks warm. “Oh, please. I’m just concerned, that’s all. Besides, I’ve got more important things to focus on. Her friends exchanged amused glances, sensing her internal conflict but choosing to tease her gently. Deep inside, Veronica knew the truth. She was already falling—hard. Her heart raced whenever she thought of Lyka, and her resolve to stay unaffected was slowly crumbling. She just refused to admit it out loud, even to herself. With a small, almost imperceptible smile, Veronica looked away, trying to hide her feelings behind her confident facade. But she couldn’t deny the flutter in her chest whenever she pictured Lyka’s face. No matter how much she said she was just worried or planning her revenge, her heart betrayed her. Krisha and Karina chuckled softly, knowing Veronica’s secret. They’d tease her more later, but for now, they let her keep up her brave front. Lyka pushed open the door to her apartment, the familiar scent of home welcoming her. She stepped inside and immediately saw her mother sitting on the couch, her face soft with a gentle smile. Without hesitation, Lyka hurried over and wrapped her arms around her mother in a tight hug. "Mom," Lyka whispered, her voice a little trembling. "What happened? Are you okay?" Her mother held her close, her eyes shimmering with emotion. She didn’t say anything right away, simply brushing Lyka’s hair tenderly. After a moment, she looked into her daughter’s eyes and smiled softly. "Nothing, sweetheart," she replied quietly. "I just miss my daughter. That’s all." Lyka’s shoulders relaxed a little, but she could sense there was more behind her mother’s words. She looked up at her with concern. “Really? Nothing’s wrong?” Her mother nodded gently, pulling Lyka into another warm hug. “Just missing you, that’s all. Sometimes, I worry about you, but I know you’re strong. And I’m always here for you.” They sat together inside Lyka’s apartment, sharing a quiet bond that needed no words. Lyka felt the comfort of her mother’s embrace, the reassurance that no matter what happened outside, they had each other. As they sat in peaceful silence, Lyka realized that no matter the teasing, worries, or plans unfolding around her, her family was her safe haven — the one place she could always return to. A few days passed, and Veronica found herself thinking more and more about Lyka. Their connection had grown deeper, and she couldn’t deny the pull she felt whenever she saw her or thought about her. Despite her efforts to maintain her cool, her feelings were becoming harder to hide. One morning, Veronica was unexpectedly absent from work. Lyka noticed right away and grew worried. Unsure of what might be wrong, she grabbed her phone and sent a message. Lyka: Hey Veronica, are you okay? You didn’t come to work today. What happened? A few moments later, Veronica replied. Veronica: I’m sick. Just need to rest. Lyka’s concern deepened. She hesitated for a moment, then quickly typed another message. Lyka: Do you want me to come over? What’s your address? I can check on you. After a brief pause, Veronica responded with her address. Veronica: Thanks. It’s Khwaeng Apartment 32 10 Soi Sukhumvit 40 Phra Khanong Khlong Toei Bangkok. Just come when you can. Lyka nodded to herself, feeling a mix of worry and determination. She quickly finished her tasks at work and then headed to Veronica’s place, eager to see her and make sure she was okay. Lyka reached Veronica’s door and gently knocked. After a moment, the door swung open, and Veronica appeared, looking a bit pale but glad to see her. "Lyka," Veronica said softly, offering a faint smile. "You came." Lyka stepped inside quickly, her eyes scanning her. She moved closer and gently checked Veronica’s forehead, frowning slightly at how warm she felt. Veronica’s skin was indeed hot, her cheeks flushed, and her movements a little sluggish. "Veronica, you’re burning up," Lyka said softly, her concern evident. "You should go back to bed. You need rest." Veronica hesitated, then nodded weakly. "Yeah... I think you're right." Without wasting a moment, Lyka gently guided Veronica back toward her bedroom. She helped her settle onto the bed, tucking the blanket around her. "I’ll make some soup," Lyka said reassuringly, her voice gentle. "You just rest here. I’ll be right back." Veronica looked at Lyka, grateful for her kindness. As Lyka hurried to prepare something warm and comforting, she couldn’t help but feel her heart soften even more. She promised herself she’d do everything she could to take care of Veronica — not just because she was worried, but because she cared deeply for her. Lyka finished preparing the warm, fragrant soup and carefully carried the steaming bowl back to Veronica’s bedroom. She gently set it down on the bedside table and looked at Veronica, who was lying in bed with a tired but grateful expression. "Here you go," Lyka said softly, her eyes filled with concern. "This should help you feel a little better." Veronica looked up and managed a small smile. "Thank you, Lyka. You're so sweet." Lyka sat down on the edge of the bed, gently helping Veronica sit up a bit. She took a spoonful of the soup, blew on it gently, and then brought it to Veronica’s lips. "Open up," Lyka said softly. Veronica obediently opened her mouth, and Lyka carefully fed her the warm soup. The comforting taste and warmth seemed to soothe her a little. Lyka continued feeding her patiently, making sure Veronica took small, manageable bites. "That’s good," Lyka encouraged softly. "Just rest and take your time." Veronica looked at her with appreciation, feeling safe and cared for. As Lyka finished feeding her, she gently pressed a cool cloth to Veronica’s forehead again, checking her temperature. "Do you want anything else?" Lyka asked kindly. Veronica shook her head slightly, her eyes closing for a moment. "No, just... thank you. I feel better already with you here." Lyka smiled softly, her heart warming at Veronica’s words. She stayed by her side, ready to help her recover and make sure she was comfortable. After Veronica finished the soup, she looked up at Lyka with a gentle, slightly vulnerable expression. Her eyes shimmered softly in the dim light. "Lyka," Veronica whispered, her voice shy but earnest. "Can I... can I hug you? Please?" Lyka hesitated for a moment, then saw the longing and trust in Veronica’s eyes. Without a second thought, she nodded softly. "Of course," Lyka replied gently. She moved closer and wrapped her arms around Veronica in a warm, comforting hug. Veronica sighed contentedly, leaning into Lyka’s embrace. The moment was tender and filled with unspoken care and understanding. Veronica then looked up at Lyka with a small, tired smile. "Can you stay with me... tonight? Please sleep with me?" Lyka’s heart softened at her request. She nodded again without hesitation, gently settling herself beside Veronica on the bed. She pulled the blanket over them both, ensuring Veronica felt safe and loved. "I’ll stay as long as you need," Lyka assured her softly, holding her close. In that quiet, intimate moment, the two shared a sense of comfort and connection, knowing they were there for each other. The soft morning light filtered gently through the window, casting a warm glow across the room. Veronica slowly stirred from her sleep, her eyelids fluttering open. As she looked around, her gaze fell on Lyka, still wrapped in a peaceful, protective embrace. Lyka was sleeping soundly, her arms still gently holding Veronica. Veronica’s heart fluttered unexpectedly, and a tender warmth spread through her chest. She gazed at Lyka’s serene face, noticing the soft expression and the way her hair was slightly tousled from sleep. A slow realization dawned on Veronica—she had fallen in love with Lyka. The feelings she had kept hidden now bloomed clearly in her heart, filling her with a mix of affection and gratitude. Carefully, she shifted slightly, not wanting to wake Lyka, but feeling an overwhelming urge to hold onto this moment. She reached out softly, her fingers brushing Lyka’s hand gently, a silent thank you for her kindness and care. Veronica closed her eyes for a moment, her heart pounding softly. She knew that this connection was something special—something she didn’t want to let go of. With a gentle, contented smile, she decided to stay still, savoring the quiet intimacy of the morning, knowing that her feelings for Lyka had deepened into something truly meaningful.
