Night settled heavy over the ruined chapel.
The ritual circle had been carved into the stone floor hours ago. Silver dust lined the edges, and small black candles burned at each point of the circle. Their flames flickered strangely, like they were breathing.
Vespera knelt at the center.
Her chains had been rearranged so they pinned her wrists to iron rings set in the floor. The silver burned faintly against her pale skin.
She didn’t struggle.
She only watched.
Elias stood just outside the circle, gripping a dagger forged of silver and ash wood. His hands were tense, but steady.
Mirella stood opposite him, arranging the final herbs into a small iron bowl.
“Once we begin,” the witch said quietly, “no one breaks the circle.”
Elias nodded.
“Understood.”
Vespera smiled faintly from the center.
“Oh good,” she murmured. “A performance.”
Mirella ignored her.
She lit the herbs. Thick gray smoke began to curl into the air, carrying a sharp bitter scent.
The candles flared brighter.
“Repeat the words after me,” Mirella said to Elias.
Her voice shifted as she began speaking in an ancient language—low, rhythmic, almost like a chant.
Elias followed, his voice rough but determined.
The smoke thickened.
The air in the chapel began to hum.
At first, nothing happened.
Then Vespera inhaled sharply.
Her back arched against the chains as something unseen twisted inside her chest.
A low growl slipped from her throat.
“Ah,” she breathed. “There it is.”
The silver circle began glowing faintly.
Mirella’s chanting grew louder.
“Human blood remembers. Human soul returns. Curse of night, release what was taken.”
Elias repeated every word.
Vespera laughed weakly.
“You think words will save me?”
Then suddenly—
She screamed.
Not a vampire’s hiss.
A human scream.
Her body convulsed violently as dark veins crawled across her pale skin.
Elias stepped forward instinctively.
“Stay back!” Mirella snapped.
But his eyes were locked on Vespera.
Her red eyes flickered wildly.
For a moment they glowed bright crimson—
Then dimmed.
Her breathing grew ragged.
The chains rattled as she struggled against something invisible clawing through her body.
“Elias—” she gasped suddenly.
His heart stopped.
It was the first time she had said his name without mockery.
“Vespera?”
Her head lifted.
Her eyes weren’t fully red anymore.
For just a moment… they looked almost human.
Confused.
Afraid.
“Where… are we?” she whispered.
The sound of her voice cracked something inside Elias’ chest.
“You’re safe,” he said quickly. “The ritual is working.”
But Mirella’s chanting had slowed.
Her eyes were fixed on Vespera with sharp focus.
Something unexpected was happening.
The curse wasn’t leaving quietly.
Vespera suddenly clutched at her chest.
Her body began shaking violently again.
“No,” she whispered.
Her voice sounded small.
Terrified.
“Something’s wrong.”
Elias stepped forward again.
“Mirella—”
“Keep chanting!” the witch ordered.
Elias forced himself to continue the words.
Vespera’s eyes flickered wildly again.
Human.
Vampire.
Human.
Vampire.
Her breathing grew shallow.
Then suddenly—
Her body collapsed.
Completely still.
The chains hung loose.
The candles flickered violently.
Elias froze.
“…Vespera?”
She didn’t move.
Her head hung forward, pale hair falling across her face.
No breath.
No movement.
Mirella’s chanting stopped.
The silence in the chapel was suffocating.
Elias dropped the dagger and rushed forward.
“Vespera!”
He knelt beside her, lifting her face gently.
Her skin felt cold.
Too cold.
“Vespera, wake up—”
Then suddenly—
Her hand shot up and grabbed his wrist.
Hard.
Elias gasped.
Her eyes opened slowly.
They were no longer glowing red.
They were dark brown.
The same warm brown they had been years ago.
Vespera blinked slowly, as if the world around her was unfamiliar.
Her gaze moved across the chapel.
The chains.
The candles.
Then finally…
Elias.
For a long moment she just stared at him.
Confused.
Breathing softly now.
“…Elias?” she whispered.
His eyes filled instantly.
“Yes,” he breathed.
“It’s me.”
Her grip on his wrist loosened slowly.
Her brows furrowed slightly.
“I… remember the fire,” she said quietly.
Her voice sounded fragile.
Like someone waking from a long nightmare.
Then something flickered behind her eyes.
A shadow of hunger.
Just for a second.
So small Elias almost missed it.
But Mirella did not.
The witch’s gaze darkened slightly as she watched them.
Because the ritual had worked.
Vespera was human again.
Mostly.
But the curse…
had not vanished completely.
