“Blow your candles, Son. Happy Birthday, Tobias.”
Today is my 8th birthday. It’s been more than a year. Grandma is recovering well. She had multiple operations since she prolonged her operation so that her heart weakened more. And we’re all waiting for Aunt Alicia to come back.
“Thanks, Mom.”
I blew the candles on my cake.
“Happy Birthday, Bud. Here’s my gift for you.”
Dad gave me his gift. I opened it and it was a new game console.
“Thanks, Dad.”
A baby’s cry can be heard.
“Wait, your sister is awake, Tobias. I’ll get her so she can celebrate with you.”
Yeah, I have a 5-month-old beautiful and cute younger sister. If Aunt Alica was here, she'd probably tease my parents for planting another offspring on that day that she brought me to a matchmaking event. I kinda miss her, to be honest. Looking back at our conversation that day, I slowly comprehended how hard life was for her.
“Delivery to Sir Tobias.”
The adults looked at each other, expecting that one of them would bring a surprise. They all shook their heads. I shrugged and accepted the delivery. There’s a note on top of the present.
From: Your most charming Aunt
To: The second man I fell in love with
I smiled. Most charming? She’s the only Aunt I have. Dad is an orphan. The inside of the box is a bunch of chocolates and a letter. I opened the letter.
Yow! Happy Birthday, my handsome accessory. Did you like my gift? Well, that’s what I owe you for your acting as my son on that match-making event. You’re welcome, hahahaha. I hope you are still a smart kid, please. I know you miss me, but you still won’t be able to see my beautiful face. Soon, you’ll all witness how time favors me. I’m telling you, I have become more beautiful and smarter.
By the way, I have another gift. It’s for everybody. Don’t worry, it’s not fake. I’m still not that crazy to forge something like that. It’s in the bottom part of the box. I hope you’re happy for me because I am.
Happy Birthday again, Tob. See you when I see you.
I saw a small envelope on the part that she said on the letter. I opened it and I saw a patient’s record. It’s a sonogram. I showed it to my parents.
“From Aunt Alicia.”
Mom shrieked.
“Mom, look!”
She showed it to Grandma.
“Finally!”
Then they gave it back to me. I gasped when I saw the patient’s name.
Mary Alicia Martinez-Ramirez
I can only imagine her chuckling if she saw my reaction.
She's still full of surprises, huh?
