I saw the maids dragging 3 big suitcases inside the house. A woman is following them. She had an annoyed expression pasted on her face. When she saw us, she smiled widely. Me, my Mom and my Grandma are having snacks on our balcony.
“Yow, everyone! The beautiful me is back.”
She bowed like a noble lady. I saw Mom and Grandma’s faces crumpled.
“You even prepared a cake for my arrival? Aren’t you all the sweetest?”
She took Mom’s plate and ate it as if it was hers.
“For goodness’ sake, Alicia! You're 26 years old already, at least use a different spoon. That’s gross!”
Grandma’s voice rose.
“I miss you too, Mom.”
Yup. The woman who just arrived is my Aunt, my Mom’s younger sister.
“So you still know how to come home, huh?”
“Of course, Mom! My memories are intact, I know perfectly where our home is.”
“Really?”
“Uh huh.”
She nodded happily, then she smiled while blinking cutely at Grandma.
“Humph!”
Grandma angrily tossed her napkin on the table. She stood up and walked out. My Aunt just shrugged like she didn't care. My Mom shakes her head while looking at her sister.
“Alicia, Alicia…. You're still a pain as you were before.”
“You know, my dear sister, dates are the ones that change. Not me. If I ever changed, that is the fact that I’m more beautiful now. Look at your son, he keeps on staring at me ever since I stepped inside the house. Like what you see, my dear nephew?”
I gave her a questioning look. And I don’t know why, but she approvingly nodded.
“And it looks like his characteristics aren't as boring as his mother's. Thank God! But you know, it’s okay to greet me. No need to be shy. You can just say, ‘Welcome home, Aunt Alicia. You are the most beautiful woman I have ever seen in my entire six-year-life.’”
Mom’s right. She’s unusual.
“And you know that kids don’t know how to lie, right?”
I rebutted. She grinned widely. She shook my Mom’s hand.
“Congratulations! Your son is a devil’s spawn. You succeeded at one try.”
“You just met my son, Alicia. He’s a good boy.”
“But that was enough to say that he is definitely not what you claim him to be.”
My Mom winced.
“It’s no use arguing with you.”
“Uh huh, because I’m right. You just have to accept the rotten seed that sprouted out of your womb.”
Mom shakes her head. Aunt Alicia finished Grandma’s leftover cake.
“So why are you annoyed before seeing us?”
My Mom inquired.
“My flight was delayed for 3 hours. Who wouldn’t be annoyed at that?”
“Impatient as ever?”
“Told you, I’m still the same.”
“Okay.”
“You don’t believe me?”
She squinted at Mom. Mom just shrugged at her. They shrugged the same way, they really are sisters.
“Whatever! I still have jet lag, so I'm going to my room to sleep. The maids are probably done cleaning it. Nice to finally meet you, Tobias.”
She smiled at me. This time, it was warm. I smiled back. She stood up after and started walking away.
“Alicia?”
Mom called her after 3 steps. She turned around.
“Yes?”
“It may be late, but welcome home. We’re happy that you're back.”
“Yeah, welcome home to me.”
She turned her back again. Waved her right arm above her head before continuing to walk away.
