Chapter 2

Helena's POV: A man in a black bodyguard uniform pulled out gauze and a tourniquet, then stepped toward Kyle. Staring at my little boy, whose vision was already blurring from blood loss and searing agony, I knew I couldn't wait another second. Every ticking second that slipped away only made it less and less likely that we'd be able to reattach Kyle's legs. The second the man finished wrapping Kyle's wounds, I lunged forward and snatched his wrist hard. He froze for a beat, then snapped his glare toward me, his dark eyes brimming with cold irritation and unmasked threat. "What the hell do you think you're doing!" I forced myself to stay calm, "Please, I beg you. help me get him to a hospital. He's just a little boy! If we don't get him to a hospital with these terrible wounds, he'll die! Whatever Martin pays you, I'll double it—no, I'll triple it!" This was my only shot. I had to grab it with both hands. This man was Martin's trusted right-hand man, with free rein to come and go from this place whenever he wanted. He was the only hope I had left right now. But when he heard my plea, all he did was pull a cold, mocking smirk. He wrenched his hand free of my grip, his voice dripping with utter disgust. "Money? Mrs. Collins, have you lost your mind from fear? You have money? Where on earth would you get money from? Everything you wear, every bite you eat, all of it comes from Mr. Collins, doesn't it? "You're a goddamn orphan with no family to fall back on. What the hell could you possibly trade with me? "You wanna use Martin's own money to bribe me into betraying him? That's the funniest joke I've ever heard!" Every word he spoke was a poison-tipped needle, stabbing deep into my heart one after another. So this is what everyone thought of me all along. I was just a parasitic dodder vine clinging to Martin to survive, nothing more. Just when despair was swallowing me whole, the man's gaze started prowling over my body. The cold indifference in his eyes melted away, replaced by shameless, unbridled lust. A sickening, mocking grin tugged at the corner of his mouth. "Though, I suppose..." He huffed a creepy, leering chuckle, and his lewd finger drifted forward, stopping so close to my cheek it almost touched. "Sure, you don't have any money. But you, Mrs. Collins... you're still a pretty tasty little thing, aren't you? "Martin always acts like you're such a precious treasure. I wonder what you taste like..." Unending shame crashed over me, coiling in my chest and turning my stomach inside out, like I was gonna retch any second. I stared at that grotesque, leering face in front of me, and I ached to claw it to pieces. But Kyle's weak cries of pain clamped down on my sanity, holding me back. 'Is this... is this really the only option I have?'
