CHAPTER 4 — The Rule Breaker

It started small. Ava stayed late to mark papers. The school was nearly empty. Until she heard footsteps. Not rushed. Measured. She didn’t look up immediately. “I thought principals went home early,” she said. Damien leaned against the doorway. “I thought teachers did as well.” “Some of us have work ethics.” A faint smile. “I’m starting to notice that about you.” She finally looked at him. “You notice a lot.” “I have to.” That answer lingered longer than it should have. Silence stretched. Then he stepped inside the room. Not invading. Not asking permission. Just… present. “You shouldn’t stay this late alone,” he said. Ava raised a brow. “Is that a safety concern or an order?” “Neither.” A pause. “An observation.” She closed her file. “I can take care of myself.” “I don’t doubt that.” That was the problem. He meant it. And that meant he had already seen enough to believe it. Before leaving, he added: “There are people in this world who punish strength.” Ava met his gaze. “And?” A faint pause. “I don’t like people touching what I oversee.” Then he left. And Ava sat still for a long time after that. Because that didn’t sound like concern. It sounded like ownership.
