CHAPTER 1 — The New Principal

343 Words
The school was quieter than usual that morning. Not peaceful—controlled. The kind of quiet that felt like something was watching from behind the walls. Ava didn’t notice it at first. She was used to chaos hidden under polite surfaces. Schools were full of it—students, teachers, systems pretending everything was fine. Until it wasn’t. “Miss Hart?” A voice interrupted her thoughts. She turned. The head secretary stood at the doorway, tense in a way people only got when something important had changed. “The new principal is here.” Ava raised a brow. “Already?” “He didn’t want an introduction assembly. He’s already in his office.” That was… unusual. Most principals wanted speeches, handshakes, presence. Whoever this was, he was avoiding all of it. ─── Later that day, Ava walked past the administrative corridor. She wasn’t looking for him. But she felt it. That strange awareness—like walking into a room where the air had weight. The door to the principal’s office was open. And she saw him. He wasn’t doing anything dramatic. Just sitting behind the desk, reading a file. But something about him made her pause. Not his looks. Not his suit. It was the stillness. The kind of stillness that didn’t belong to calm people. It belonged to dangerous ones. He looked up. And for a fraction of a second, neither of them moved. Then he smiled politely. “Miss Hart, I assume.” Her pulse didn’t change. That was the strange part. People like him usually triggered instinct. Fear. Curiosity. Attraction. But Ava only felt alert. Like standing too close to a storm that hadn’t decided to strike yet. “Yes,” she said. “And you are?” “Damien Vale.” The name settled in the space between them. Nothing about it sounded normal. “Welcome to the school,” she added. His gaze didn’t leave hers. “Thank you. I hope I won’t disturb your routine.” Something in his tone suggested he already knew he would.
