Chapter 3

1099 Words
Morning came and my eyes were still sleepy from the paperwork I had made last night. I pinched my eyes and wiped off the debris made from my eyes. I turned my head to the side to see the time on the nightstand. Quarter to 6. I changed my clothes and put on some shoes. Got my tumbler, watch, phone, and earphones. Time to exercise. I stepped outside my apartment and went outside to jog for a couple of minutes. It’s been exactly 3 months since I got shot in the chest and it took the surgeons about three hours to take it out. Being shot once on the chest was painful enough but with three shots taken, this is personal. I really want to take down the guy behind this. I remember so clearly that as I stepped outside of the hall after I finished my case in the court, I was shot looking up in the sky with a sigh of relief. How maddening it is. I ran around the park and a few people were around. Half an hour had passed and I decided to get back. After getting ready to go to work, my partner picked me up on the way to work. “I told you not to pick me up.” I said as we were in the car. “It’s an order.” Chase replied. I looked at him in a sigh. “Since when do you follow chief’s order?” “I always follow his order.” He replied, trying to be casual about it. “The last time I checked, you didn’t even submit the case report and Ryan had to do it. And the other time the chief told you to go with him at the DA and you won’t even show up.” “Well, people change.” He shrugged. “Those two examples happened yesterday.” “Well, baby steps, you know.” Chase smirks. I scoff at his remark but I’m used to his rebellious side. Despite the changes that I had gone through in the past months, it’s good to see some things stay the same. Soon after, we arrived at the police station and a case immediately called for us. Instead of leaving the car, Chase drives straight to the location of the crime scene that Ryan sent. We arrived at a lake house on the outskirts of the city. Police tapes were placed around the house and as we walked on the creaky steps of the small cabin near a river, Ryan walked out looking uneasy with his mask on. “What’s wrong?” I ask. He shakes his head. “It’s nasty.” Chase and I got curious and I stepped in as Chase followed behind. We both wore masks and gloves. A creaky broken door greeted us, but a foul odor met us first. The interiors were a mess. There were broken glasses and pieces of furniture. A fight seemed to have happened. I thought that was hectic but the next room was a lot worst as blood-stained splashed over the floor and walls of the kitchen. Three bloodied bodies were there. Forensics were examining the scene along with Benson. Chase walked around and converses with one of the forensic operators. “What’s the case?” I ask him. Benson steps towards me but carefully walks on the floor with no bloodstains. “A file report was about missing people and when police were dispatched to check the place, they found this crime scene. Three bodies. One female, two males. The names are Denise Futon, Mark Henan, and Derek Roy. All 17 years old. We found their IDs in the living room placed inside their belongings.” He carefully steps towards the body near us. With the pen in his hand, he pointed at the dead body leaned on the refrigerator. “This kid with a gun seems to be the one that killed the other kid right over there.” Pointing at the other male lying on the floor, just near the sink. “But the girl right here is not killed with a gunshot.” Spoke Cathy, one of the forensics. She’s currently near the girl’s body, examining her clothes and skin. “There’s a bruise on her cheek. Then, there are finger marks on her neck. She was most probably strangled, but I need their bodies at my office to confirm anything.” She stood up and closes her small pad. “Based on their skin color, their wounds, and even the smell, I could say their death was about 2 days ago.” “What a weekend for them, huh?” Chase commented. “This is a crime scene. Respect it, ok?” Cathy places her hand on her waist in disappointment. “Sorry.” Chase casually said. “Their phones were just sent to the cyber department to check any leads, and their families are being informed as of the moment.” said Benson. “We should check with their families while waiting for their bodies to be examined.” I said to Chase. I scanned the room for a minute before leaving, primarily because it stinks. After getting the profile of the bodies from Ryan, Chase and I head out to one of the families of the dead kids. While Chase drives there, I read the files and discuss their background. “So, all three went to the same high school. All are best friends but I think Denise and Mark are in a relationship.” I spoke “That’s written on that?” “No. Mark was wearing a ring and Denise has the same ring that’s hanging on her neck.” “That implied they were in a relationship?” “They’re kids. They find little things the most significant thing that determines their intentions and life.” “Really?” “Kids these days are into matching themselves towards the one they admire.” “Ok. Well, what else do we have on those kids?” “They’re all from the same neighborhood so it’s only practical or logical that they also went to a nearby high school. They were basically friends for a long time. Oh, smart kids. They all are in their top class.” “That’s ironic” Commented Chase “I hope they didn’t get into drugs.” I said back. “Are they rich?” “I don’t know.” Their parent’s background isn’t here. “We’ll ask about what they know once we get there.”
