Chapter 13

687 Words
It’s almost dark, and I’ve been sitting here for what has felt like two hours. I’ve been sitting and watching traffic. There’s definitely something up. I’ve seen far more patrol cars than usual, and a couple even pulled through the parking lot. It’s kinda died down a little bit so I’m thinking I might be able to slip in and grab my phone. I need to find my car, and I need to bunker down for a few days somewhere until all of this blows over. The time feels right. I stand up, and walk leisurely the long way around the apartment building. There’s two ways to get to my hallway. No matter what my door is exposed to the road, but if I take the long way I’ll be completely hidden until I get to my door. So that is what I will do. The bench made me stiff and my body is crying for a hot shower and my bed. I carry on walking trying my hardest to not look like I’m about to s**t my guts out because I’m so nervous. I’ve got certified cop vision right now; everything and everyone looks like an officer of the law ready to take me into the station. Walking a little more briskly I make it to my door, throw the key in the lock, twist, and burst in. Entering my stale-ass-home made me almost sick. I grabbed an empty backpack and stuffed it with a few days worth of clothes. Next was the laptop, charger, phone charger… my phone!! Where is it…? I zip the bag closed after throwing a few more supplies in, and slung it over my shoulders. I start rummaging through the clutter of my room in hopes to find my phone. I slide my hand along the edge of my bed and then my finger brushes the feeling of cool smooth glass. AH HAH! I found- *THUD THUD THUD THUD* “WICHITA COUNTY POLICE. OPEN UP” My heart drops. There’s no back door and I’m on the second floor. They must have seen me come in… FUCK *THUD THUD THUD THUD* “WE KNOW YOU ARE IN THERE, COME OUT OR WE ARE COMING IN. WE HAVE A WARRANT” Fuck these guys mean business… I must have crashed my car and dipped from the scene or something… There’s no time to think… I slide the window open in the kitchen that overlooks the sink. Slide my backpack off my back, and throw it out the window. f**k I hope my laptop didn’t just bite it. *THUD THUD THUD THUD* “LAST CHANCE OR WE ARE COMING IN” I crawl up on the counter and poke my head out the window. It’s about a 15 foot drop into some grass. “f**k-“ I spin myself around, dangle my feet out the window and with a big push of my arms I eject myself from the building. Almost simultaneously I hear the smashing sound of my door crashing open. Falling for a little longer than I exp- *crash* I land hard, I tried my best to brace myself by keeping my knees a little bent to cushion the impact but it did little good. My knees smash against my chest, knocking the wind out of me, and sending bolts of lighting up and down my legs. Uuuuuurrghhhh… Jesus… christ… I moan to myself as I fight against every urge in my body to lay there and pass out. I grab a handful of dirt and grass and pull myself up to a sitting position. Then to a crouching position, and I lift myself off the ground to my feet. I feel like I weigh 1000 pounds, and I’m running on pure instinct at this point. Trying so hard to ignore all pain and signs of warning from my body I put one foot in front of the other towards my backpack. I reach it, throw it over my shoulder, put the hood of my sweatshirt up, and slowly- very slowly use the darkness of the alleyway to leave the area.
