The morning light crept softly , through the curtain, painting Lara's room with pale gold. She lay still, eyes tracing the ceiling, feeling the emptiness where Ethan warmth once was. It has been nearly three weeks since he started pulling away from their friends with benefits - cold text , avoiding her calls, and when they did talk , his words were clipped, distant. She remembered the laughter, the teasing, the fire in his eyes . Now silence and cold space filled the gaps Lara signed, running her fingers through tangled hair, the ache in her chest growing sharper. She is not supposed to be feeling this way. Did I push him too far? Was I distracting him or did he already have someone ? But she pushed those thoughts aside. She had asked for what they had, even invited it. She wouldn't say he used her, it was just fun. Maybe be wants space. Maybe it's for the best. Still , the loneliness erept in , wrapping itself like a shadow she couldn't shake. Determined not to spiral, Lara decided to focus on what truly mattered - her internship program, her future and het own happiness. ---- That afternoon, Zayne texted, "Hey , wanna hang out? Just mend , no pressure." Lara smiled at the screen, heart fluttering with a cautious hope. They had been getting closer over the past few weeks, but only as friends. She wasn't ready for anything more - yet . Maybe tonight was just what she needed : company without complications. When Lara arrived at the boutique to pick out something for the date Zayne had invited her to, she almost bumped into someone. "Ariella !" Lara blinked in surprise. It was her old friend from back home - stylish, confident, with a mischievous smile. "I haven't seen you in forever! what are you doing here?" Ariella grinned. "Shopping for a night out. You?" "Same", Lara said, feeling the warm familiarity settling in. They quickly fell into an easy corner station, laughing over memories and gossip. As Ariella helped Lara pick out a dress - something sleek, just daring enough - she teased, "you still playing it safe, huh ? When are you going to stop hiding and show that fire I know you have got." Lara blushed, adjusting the strap of the dress." Maybe soon. Or maybe I am just figuring out what I really want. Ariella winked. "Whatever you do, don't let anyone make you doubt yourself. Especially not some distant guy." Lara nodded, a flicker of pain crossing her face. "Yeah ........ you are right". Back at the apartment, Lara laid the dress on the bed and stared at her reflection in the mirror. Her chest tightened with nervous excitement. Was she ready for this? To be seen again? To feel something other than cold distance. Her phone buzzed - Zayne confirming the time and place. She took a deep breath, smoothing her hair and applying a soft gloss to her lips. Tonight was hers. ---- Ethan sat alone in his room , dark thoughts. Swirling like a storm. He watched his phone, the screen stubbornly silent despite Lara's messages. His heart clenched painfully , jealousy gnawing at him as he pictures her with Zayne. It wasn't just jealousy. It was fear . Fear of falling in love, losing control, of admitting feelings he had buried deep. Why did I have to care ?he muttered, running his hands through his hair. He hated his self for feeling weak, but there was no denying it. The more he pushed Lara away, the more he realized how much he wanted to hold on. But the past two weeks have changed things. He wasn't the same man who doesn't share Passionate nights and whispered promises. Not anymore. That evening, Lara met Zayne at the cozy little restaurant he had picked out . The atmosphere was released, warm candlelight flickering between them as they settled into their booth. "So", Zayne smiled, "this is my favorite spot. I thought you may like it ". Lara smiled back, nerve fluttering in her stomach. "it's nice. I needed this - a break from everything". They talked easily - about work , music, dreams and ridiculous childhood stories. For the first time in weeks, Lara laughed freely , the tension easing from her shoulders. When zayne reached across the table to gently squeeze her hand, a shiver ran through her. It was a simple touch, but it spoke volumes. Comfort, care , something more than friends. Still , she held herself back, remembering Ethan is the shadow that lingered at the edge of her heart. After dinner, as they stepped outside into the cool night air, Lara felt lighter. Maybe this was the beginning of something new - or maybe just a night to remind her she was worth more than heartache. Meanwhile, Ethan paced in his room, restled and torn. He wanted to call her , to apologize, to explain - but the words stuck in his throat. Instead, he stared out the window , the city lights blurring into a distant haze. She deserves better. Maybe I am the one who needs to change. But could he? and would Lara still want him if he did ? The question haunted him as the night deepened. Back at Lara room , lara lay awake, fingers tracing the cool sheets. She thought about Ethan's absence, the sting of betrayal, the unexpected comfort of Zayne's company, and Ariella's fierce advice. Tomorrow was another day , another chance to rebuild herself from the ashes of broken promises. For now , she closed her eyes and whispered a promise to herself :I am stronger than this.
