"I thought we'd never leave." I set the bags of food down on Hattie's counter right after we got home to her apartment.
"Your mom was just excited. Besides, she hasn't seen you in several months." Hattie turned on me after locking the door. "I can't believe you haven't seen her in almost a year."
"I moved to the other side of the country for scholarships, then once I finished school, I found a trainer there." Opening the fridge, I unloaded the leftovers from my parents' house.
Hattie tugged on my arm, pulling me to the other side of the kitchen where she stood with a vulnerable look on her face. The urge to reassure her about whatever she was thinking about flooded through me. "I've never lived anywhere else."
