I opened my eyes and felt completely awake and refreshed. That’s not something I was used to these days, with all the overtime I put in at my job to try to make ends meet. It seemed like I always woke up still tired, no matter how much sleep I got. I was so stunned by the strange feeling of alertness, it took me a moment to realize I wasn’t in my bed anymore. Open skies and a grassy field had replaced my crappy apartment. And I was directly under a rainbow. I realized I was dreaming — I must have been, right? — but I struggled with making myself believe it. It didn’t feel like a dream, but I can’t articulate precisely why I felt that way. Everything just seemed more real than any dream I’d ever had, including those that I had previously thought felt real. I could smell, for one thing.
