Flames of Jealousy

899 Words
Morning arrived gently in Elara’s small apartment, sunlight slipping through thin curtains and brushing her skin like a quiet promise. For the first time in days maybe weeks Elara woke without dread curling in her chest. There was a strange lightness to her breathing, a softness she couldn’t quite explain. She sat up slowly, pressing her palm to her chest, surprised by the warmth there. In the kitchen, her mother hummed softly as she prepared breakfast, the scent of fried eggs and toast filling the air. Elara joined her, tying her hair back, automatically reaching for plates. “You’ve been smiling a lot lately,” her mother said gently, glancing at her over her shoulder. “It’s nice to see.” Elara froze for half a second, then laughed quietly. “Have I?” “Yes,” her mother replied, amused. “Even when you think you’re hiding it.” Elara shrugged, helping set the table. “School’s just… been okay, I guess.” Her mother studied her face the relaxed eyes, the ease in her movements. “Okay can be good,” she said softly. “Especially for you.” Elara nodded, her heart fluttering for reasons she didn’t dare say out loud. She thought of Ethan’s smile. His patience. The way he looked at her like she wasn’t fragile or broken but simply Elara. Her mother squeezed her hand before grabbing her bag. “I have a long shift today. I might not be back until late.” “That’s okay,” Elara replied. “I’ll manage.” “I know you will,” her mother said with pride. “You always do.” School buzzed louder than usual that morning, whispers threading through hallways like wildfire. Seraphina’s name floated everywhere attached, as always, to Andrain’s. Seraphina herself seemed to glow, clinging to Andrain’s arm as though she belonged there, her laughter ringing sharp and deliberate. She leaned close, whispering things only he could hear, her fingers brushing his sleeve possessively. Andrain barely responded. His eyes kept drifting against his will toward Elara. Elara sat beneath the jacaranda tree with Lyra and Ethan, sunlight dancing through violet blossoms above them. Lyra chatted animatedly, completely unaware of the storm quietly forming around them. Ethan listened to Elara with genuine attention, his body angled toward hers, his presence calm and grounding. “You know,” he said softly, “you don’t look like someone who’s constantly waiting for the ground to disappear under her feet anymore.” Elara smiled, shy but real. “Maybe I stopped waiting.” Something warm flickered in his eyes. Lyra stretched. “I’m going to grab snacks before class. Don’t disappear without me,” she teased, walking off. Silence settled between Elara and Ethan not awkward, just heavy with unspoken things. “Can I” Ethan began, then stopped, searching her face. “Is this okay?” Elara nodded. He leaned in slowly, giving her time to pull away. She didn’t. Their lips met softly at first, tentative and careful. The world seemed to fade as the kiss deepened not rushed, not reckless just warm and honest. Elara’s fingers curled lightly into his shirt as she felt something inside her shift, open. She wasn’t afraid. Across the courtyard, Andrain saw everything. His chest tightened violently, breath hitching as though something had punched straight through him. His jaw clenched, his gray eyes darkening. Why does it bother me? Why does it feel like this? Seraphina noticed the moment his attention slipped. Her lips curved into a knowing smile. Without waiting, she stepped closer, pressing herself into him, fingers sliding into his slicked-back hair. “Look at me,” she murmured. Andrain didn’t think. He kissed her hard, claiming, angry. The kiss wasn’t tender. It wasn’t gentle. It was fueled by jealousy and pride and denial. Seraphina responded eagerly, wrapping her arms around his neck, triumphant. To anyone watching, it looked perfect. But inside, Andrain felt hollow. Elara pulled away from Ethan slowly, breath unsteady, unaware of the eyes burning into her from across the yard. Ethan smiled, brushing his thumb lightly against her hand. “I’ve wanted to do that for a while,” he admitted. Elara swallowed. “Me too.” Lyra returned just in time to catch the lingering closeness. She grinned. “Oh. So I miss one moment?” Elara groaned softly, embarrassed, while Ethan laughed. Nearby, Ariana watched her brother with quiet fury. She saw the kiss. Saw the way Seraphina clung to him like a prize. Kieran stepped beside her. “You okay?” Ariana shook her head. “He’s lying to himself,” she said bitterly. “And hurting everyone in the process.” Kieran didn’t argue. “Some people confuse control with strength.” Ariana glanced at him, surprised. “You always say things like that?” He smirked. “Only when they’re true.” Classes passed in a blur. Andrain couldn’t focus. His father’s words echoed in his head. Don’t upset Seraphina. Her father’s investment matters. Seraphina leaned close during lessons, satisfied, victorious. But when Andrain closed his eyes, it wasn’t Seraphina he saw. It was Elara’s smile. And it terrified him. As the final bell rang, Elara packed her bag, unaware that lines had been crossed that could never fully be erased. The flames were no longer sparks. They were burning. And shadows were growing longer.
