Chapter Two: The Invitation You Can't Refuse

507 Words
The Glass Empire The email arrived at 6:42 a.m. Elena almost ignored it. She was still half-asleep, wrapped in her blanket, debating whether she could skip her morning lecture without consequences. Her phone buzzed again. And again. Groaning, she reached for it. One email. Subject line: VOSS INDUSTRIES — SELECTION NOTICE She frowned. “No way,” she whispered. Sitting up now, fully awake, she opened it. Her eyes scanned the words once. Then twice. Then a third time, just to be sure. We are pleased to inform you that you have been selected to participate in the Voss Urban Development Initiative… Her heart skipped. This wasn’t small. This wasn’t normal. This was career-defining. Her hands tightened around the phone. “No,” she said out loud. “This has to be a mistake.” But it wasn’t. An hour later, she was sitting in her professor’s office, the email pulled up on her screen. “They don’t make mistakes like this,” Professor Hale said, adjusting his glasses. “If Voss Industries selects you, it’s intentional.” Elena leaned back slightly. “But why me?” “You tell me,” he replied. “Your designs have always stood out. You just needed someone with influence to notice.” Her mind flashed back— Rain. Grey eyes. It’s good. “This isn’t about influence,” she muttered. Her professor gave her a look. “It’s about opportunity. Don’t overthink it.” But she already was. Because she knew. And that made this complicated. — The Voss Industries headquarters didn’t just look expensive—it felt untouchable. Glass walls stretched toward the sky, reflecting the city like it belonged to them. Inside, everything was precise. Controlled. Quiet in a way that suggested power rather than peace. Elena walked in, trying to keep her expression neutral. Don’t stare. Don’t look impressed. Don’t— Okay, maybe just a little impressed. A receptionist greeted her, already expecting her. “Miss Carter. You’re on the 34th floor.” Of course she was. She stepped into the elevator, her reflection staring back at her from every angle. “You can do this,” she murmured. The doors opened. And suddenly, she wasn’t so sure anymore. The conference room was already full. Professionals. Designers. Executives. And at the center— Him. Adrian Voss. He stood at the head of the table, speaking calmly, but every word carried weight. People listened. Not politely—carefully. Like missing something he said would be a mistake. His gaze lifted mid-sentence. And locked onto hers instantly. Recognition. Immediate. Unavoidable. “You’re late,” he said. Elena glanced at the wall clock. “I’m early.” A quiet ripple of tension passed through the room. People noticed. Of course they did. Adrian studied her for a moment longer… then turned back to the meeting. “Close enough,” he said. And just like that, it continued. But something had shifted. Because now— Everyone was wondering who she was. And why Adrian Voss had noticed her at all.
