CHAPTER 5 The War Commander

1132 Words
The morning sun broke over the mountain peaks, flooding the grand solar with sharp, brilliant light. I stood by the arched windows, adjusting the silver cuffs of my high collared royal jacket. The fabric was heavy, tailored to perfection, and structured with thin layers of protective enchanted weave. It was a far cry from the faded cotton sweaters I had worn in Julian’s apartment, and it felt like armor. Today, I was to meet Alpha Cassian Sterling. The grand doors at the far end of the solar swung open with a deep, echoing reverberation. My father stood from his seat at the tea table, his expression shifting into one of stoic, high level diplomacy. Two royal guards stepped inside first, followed by a man whose presence immediately shifted the ambient pressure in the room. Cassian Sterling was imposing in a way that had nothing to do with posturing. He was broad shouldered and tall, wearing a darkened steel chestplate over a dark slate tunic, devoid of any ornate decorations save for the silver dragon emblem of his lineage pinned over his heart. Dark hair fell loosely around a sharp, hard angled jaw, but what drew the eye instantly was the pale, jagged scar that ran from his left cheekbone down toward his collarbone a violent souvenir from the northern border wars. His eyes were a piercing, stormy gray. Cold, calculating, and entirely unreadable. He stepped into the solar, his heavy combat boots silent against the marble floor. Behind him walked his chief general, a stern wolf carrying a leather-bound portfolio. "High King Aurelius," Cassian spoke. His voice was a low, resonant baritone that sounded like grinding tectonic plates. He bowed his head slightly,a gesture of respect to a monarch, but executed with the posture of a man who bowed to very few. "Alpha Sterling," my father replied, inclining his head. "Thank you for making the journey on such short notice. Allow me to introduce my daughter and heir, Princess Aurora." Cassian turned his gaze toward me. I did not drop my gaze or lower my chin. I stood tall, allowing my restored royal aura to pulse softly beneath my skin,a silent, dignified wave of ancient power that met his formidable presence head on. For a second, something flared in those stormy gray eyes a subtle flicker of surprise, quickly replaced by intense interest. He looked at me not as a pawn to be traded, nor as a delicate noblewoman to be coddled, but as an equal force of nature. "Princess Aurora," Cassian said, stepping forward and extending a heavy, leather gloved hand. I took his hand. His grip was firm, warm, and entirely steady. As our palms met, a strange, low hum of magic rippled through the air between us,a reaction of two pure, high-tier bloodlines making contact. "Alpha Cassian," I replied softly, keeping my tone smooth and composed. "Welcome to the Bloodmoon territory." He released my hand and motioned to his general, who immediately placed the leather portfolio onto the central table. Cassian pulled back a heavy carved chair and gestured for me to sit. "Let us drop the court pleasantries, Your Highness," Cassian said, taking the seat across from me while my father sat at the head of the table. "We are here to secure an alliance that will determine the survival of both our borders. I believe in complete transparency before any blood or ink is spilled." "A rare trait in high society," I noted, resting my elbows on the table and lacing my fingers together. "I prefer it that way." Cassian unclasped the leather portfolio and pulled out a thick parchment document stamped with the heavy wax seals of the Sterling territory. He slid it across the polished wood directly toward me. "This is the draft for our political contract marriage," Cassian explained, his sharp gray eyes fixed on my face. "It outlines a one year binding union. During this period, our military forces will merge under a joint command structure to crush the rogue factions along the eastern pass." I picked up the parchment, my eyes scanning the crisp, black ink. I expected clauses restricting my movement, clauses demanding my submission to his pack's laws, or terms that relegated me to a decorative figurehead, the kind of legal traps Julian’s family had constantly tried to impose on me. Instead, as I read through the lines, my breath caught slightly in my throat. The contract granted me full, uninhibited authority over the Iron Keep’s internal logistics, civil administration, and resource distribution. It explicitly stated that as his contract wife, my command over the Sterling military units would be absolute in his absence, second only to Cassian himself. Furthermore, it stated that at the conclusion of the one year term, I was entirely free to dissolve the marriage without any political or financial penalty, retaining my full royal title and territory rights. It wasn't a cage. It was an offer of co sovereignty. I looked up from the document, meeting Cassian's unblinking gaze. "You are granting a complete stranger access to your territory's inner workings and military logistics," I said, my voice laced with genuine curiosity. "You know nothing of my capabilities, yet you place the command of your keep in my hands." Cassian leaned back slightly, resting his scarred forearm against the table. "I know that you are a Bloodmoon royal who possesses the tactical education of the ancient kings," Cassian said calmly. "And I know that a woman who survived three years hiding in the shadows of a fringe pack without letting them break her spirit is neither weak nor foolish." My heart gave a sudden, unexpected thud against my ribs. He knew about my past or at least the basic outline of my exile yet there was not a trace of pity or condescension in his eyes. Only cold, unwavering respect. "In my territory, Princess, we do not chain our leaders," Cassian continued, his baritone voice filling the quiet solar. "If you are to stand beside me as my contract wife, you will hold real authority. Because a queen should never have to ask for what is already hers." I stared at him for a long moment, taking in the rugged lines of his scarred face, the absolute sincerity in his posture, and the quiet, dangerous power that radiated from his form. The contrast between this formidable war commander and the shallow, cowardly male I had left behind in the rain was so vast it was almost staggering. I picked up the fountain pen sitting beside the portfolio, unbuttoned my right cuff slightly, and looked Cassian dead in the eye. "Bring the official ink, Alpha," I said, a cold, confident smile touching my lips for the first time in years. "We have an empire to secure.”
