Chapter 1
A rat
Alex's POV
You ever get a feeling that someone is following you? You just can sense someone's present, without them even doing anything that catches your attention. Well someone had my attention right now.
When we were kids, we used to learn stuff like 911 for emergencies, or how to spell our names. Just basic information that you'd recognize so well, they would pop in your head automatically whenever you needed them.
When you're in the mafia you got to learn "the three lefts". If you suspect that someone is following you, take three left turns. If the same person is still behind you, deal with them. Three lefts later, this charcoal black car was still behind me. I hated New York traffic. I'd love to have a little race and see whose car would run into a wall first, but not on this highway. Instead I took the nearest exit and drove to a little alley, big enough to fit my car. Surprise surprise, a few moments later the same car parked on the side of the street, right next to the alley.
I loaded the gun in the car and tucked it into my clothes before ditching the car and walked a bit further in, which would probably have been the opposite action of what someone would recommend. Good thing I have a habit of not listening to someone. I could hear someone's footsteps behind me. If I had to guess, it was a man. His steps were heavy, even though he attempted to lighten them. Whoever this is though is a complete amateur at the game. I stopped after reaching a wall and turned around.
"Now how are you going to hide?" I asked looking at the guy in a black hoodie and matching black pants.
I walked closer as he seemed to be kind of shocked, when he noticed he hurried to his back and took a gun out pointing it at me.
"Too slow" I said snatching it out of his grip & twisting his arm before hitting his head with the same gun he had pointed at me knocking him out. Ironic isn't it?

The safe house
"Ciao belle- Jesus f**k, who did you kill this time?" I was greeted by my twin brother, Alessandro, who doesn't even look the slightest like me.
"Shut up and help me take him to the lockup, caught him following me around" I said as he carried him making me breath in relief. God damn he was heavy.
"Also get something to stop his bleeding. I don't want him to die yet"
He nodded at me before taking him downstairs where we "talk" with people. Depends on your definition of talk though..
I went to my office and changed into more work comfortable clothes and went downstairs with my gun tucked in my pants.
It's just a habit to take our guns with us wherever we go. You gotta make sure that you are ready for anything that might happen. Don't let the weapon control you though.. if you can't take someone down when you are unarmed, you are unworthy of being armed.
I saw Antonio & Alessandro standing in front of the locked, metal door.
Antonio, my brothers’ best friend ever since we were little kids. We grew up together, went to the same school, college & dropped out together. Now we are all in the business together.
"Ella é pazza, fratello. She knocked a dude out in daylight" Antonio said.
(She is crazy, brother)
"Would you rather be knocked out yourself?" I asked aiming my gun at him and smiling.
Yes... this is me making a joke & my sense of humour. For some reason not everyone seems to get it though...
I saw Alessandro walking towards me trying to knock the gun out of my hand
"Let's just all calm down" he spoke as he stepped closer
I lowered myself, spun around and kicked him from behind on the knees so he fell on the ground face down.
"la prossima volta sarai più fortunato"
(Better luck next time)
I tucked my gun back in my pants and opened the metal door nodding for Antonio to follow me in.
"So, asshole, want to take things the easy or hard way?" I asked looking at the man tied to a chair in the middle of the room.
He looked genuinely terrified, I mean they don't call me Diavola for no reason.
However, I wonder if he even knew who I was. Not a lot of people would have the courage to come and face me, yet alone.
I looked at Antonio and nodded towards the man with my head.
Antonio understood what I meant and got to work.
"Quindi mia cara.." he started sarcastically
(So my dear..)
"Who do you work for?"
No answer.
He asked once more, with a harder tone.
"I said, who do you work for?"
Still no answer.
"Big mistake" Antonio said before taking the baseball bat that was leaning against the wall and swinging it across the dude’s knee.
His screams filled the room, I walked towards him and asked one last time.
"So sweetheart, why don't you tell us now. Who do you work for?"
No answer.
"Okay then, the hard way it is" I said.
"12 minutes" I said looking at Antonio.
"9 minutes is mine" he said as I shrugged leaving the room and replied with a "We will see, I'm taking time" & closed the door behind me.
When it came to answers, Antonio was the right man for the job. He would get every and anyone to talk and tell their life story in 10 minutes. Which was very needed and appreciated in the game.
He was great at investigating without killing.
Unlike many people, he knew what hurt & what killed. As long as his head was in the game, there is nothing he can't get.
I went upstairs to my office & decided to get some work done and start the timer to see who's bet was the closest.
•••
10 minutes later
"Called it, 9 minutes!" Antonio practically yelled as he walked into my office drying his hands with paper towels.
"You're a minute off, that was 10." I said.
"I was the closest though belle, pay up" he said as I gave over the 100 bucks.
"So?" I asked
"He was sent to watch you. Had no plans of physically hurting you himself, he was just sent to spy on you and see your whereabouts"
"Did he say why?"
"They wanted to kidnap you later, why else would it be sherlock"
"But they don't know that I'm a leader, so why me?" I asked again.
"Oh, come on Alex, you're smarter than this. They want your father to come down to New York for you and then they would get him & take over our business"
"Who sent him?"
"Snakes, like usual"
The Black Snakes.
Our biggest rivals at the moment. Only recently though have they started acting up. Both our organizations have existed for longer than me, but only recently is their leader trying to f**k us up. They have not once, but twice tried interfering with our shipments. The part I can't understand however is how they know about our shipments.
No one who isn't in this gang should be able to access this information. Just like we cant access theirs. One wrong try with the security code, they have the right to track you down & f**k you over in court for trying to steal business information. In the mafia, where there is court there is blood. So how they hell are they able to find out about our shipments & now our whereabouts?
"Tell Alessandro and Mike to come here right now" I said to Antonio realizing how f*****g stupid I have been for missing this.
We have a f*****g rat.
