The next day at the charming little bookstore where Keisha spends her days, Bright steps in, seeking the solace that only the scent of old books can provide. Keisha, with her heart set to the rhythm of a love song playing in the background, greets him with a warm smile. The delicate chime of the doorbell heralds his entrance, and he's met with Keisha's cheerful inquiry, "Hey, hit anyone in the head today?" A playful smirk dances on her lips. "Hey, it's you," Bright replies, his eyes lighting up with recognition. "How are you doing?" "Fine," Keisha responds, her eyes reflecting a spark of something more than casual conversation. "Good," Bright acknowledges as he ambles towards the counter. Curiosity twinkles in Keisha's eyes as she questions, "What are you doing here?" The surprise in her voice is palpable. "It's a bookstore, so I came to get a book," Bright answers casually, hands comfortably tucked into his pockets. "What are you doing here?" Keisha queries, a note of disbelief in her voice. "It's a valid point," Bright retorts, a grin playing on his lips. "It's a bookstore. I came to get a book." Keisha, with an air of nonchalance, informs him, "I work here. It's part of my work-study program." "Cool," Bright acknowledges, taking in the quaint surroundings. He glances around, appreciating the organization of the shop, guided by Keisha's subtle gestures. "Textbooks are in the front. Fictions are on the right, and non-fiction over there," she gestures gracefully towards the shelves, her fingers dancing in the air. "Thank you," Bright says, a genuine smile playing on his lips as he meanders towards the bookshelves. Before disappearing into the maze of literature, he tosses a casual query over his shoulder, "Do you have any books on 'battleloads'?" Keisha, momentarily puzzled, questions, "Is that medieval history or a metal band?" The unfamiliarity of the term is evident in her expression. Bright chuckles, "It's a video game." "Ah, no, we don't carry books like that," Keisha replies. A slight disappointment flickers in Bright's eyes, but Keisha swiftly adds, "I could order it for you." "Yeah, that... that'd be cool," Bright sighs, the initial disappointment giving way to a hopeful gleam. "Okay, two choices: 'The i***t's Guide to Battleloads' or 'Battleloads for Dummies,'" Keisha suggests, a playful smirk curving her lips. "Jesus, they both sound bad, don't they?" Bright comments, his frown reflecting the amusing predicament. Keisha chuckles, "Well, a dummy is someone of low intelligence, but it can also mean, like, a crash test dummy. But an i***t is just an idiot." "Let's go with a dummy," Bright decides, embracing the humour in the situation. "Thank you," Keisha replies, her eyes glinting with amusement. "Uh, it should be here by Wednesday." "Okay," Bright nods, contemplating the days until the anticipated arrival. As Bright hands over his credit card for the book order, Keisha, with a playful glint in her eye, teases, "You know, video games are now the leading cause of divorce?" "Who says that?" Bright questions, his interest piqued. "An actuary chart listing the causes of divorce," Keisha explains, her eyes gleaming with a mischievous twinkle. "An actual what?" Bright's confusion is evident. "An actuary. Someone who compiles statistics to assess risk and uncertainty," Keisha enlightens him, a faint smile playing on her lips. "Could you... could you order me a book on that as well?" Bright's surprise is evident, and Keisha, with a playful smile, retorts, "Really?" She catches the hint of sarcasm in his tone, adding, "No." The banter between them continues, a dance of wit and charm that sets the stage for the unexpected events about to unfold. Bright, seemingly intrigued by Keisha's playful banter, decides to push the limits. "Yeah, so being a knowing-it-all," he quips, his tone teasing as he moves away, leaving Keisha momentarily flustered. "Alright, thanks," she manages to respond, a mix of irritation and amusement in her voice. "Have a good one," Bright says as he opens the door to exit the store. Keisha, absorbed in her thoughts, soon realizes that Bright has forgotten his credit card. Panicking slightly, she calls him back, rushing out of the store after him. "Hey, hey!" she calls, but Bright is already on his bicycle, pedalling away with earpieces in his ears, oblivious to her calls. "Hey, Bright, you forgot your credit card!" she shouts, but her words are lost in the urban symphony. Undeterred, Keisha quickened her pace, calling out, "Hey, Bright, hey, Bright!" As Bright finally becomes aware of her persistent calls, he turns his head towards her voice. However, the distraction proves costly as he inadvertently collides with a reversing car. The sudden impact sends him tumbling off his bicycle, and his head meets the unforgiving pavement. "Oh no!" the driver exclaims, rushing out of the car to check on Bright. Keisha, her heart pounding, sprints to the scene, surrounded by gasps from onlookers. "Oh, my God," Keisha exclaims as she reaches Bright's side, fear etched across her face. "He didn't... Is he okay?" stammers the concerned driver. "Bright! He's not responding. Call 911!" Keisha cries out, the urgency in her voice cutting through the chaotic scene. "Bright, wake up. Oh, my God, please don't die." The driver, now on the line with 911, relays the situation. "They want to know if he's breathing." Keisha, in a state of panic, replies hastily, "I don't know." "Check," the driver instructs. Kneeling beside Bright's motionless form, Keisha is torn with worry. "I can't tell," she replies as she awaits further guidance. "He can't tell," the driver relays to the emergency dispatcher. "They say give him mouth-to-mouth," he continues, the urgency escalating. "Pinch the nose," the driver instructs Keisha, handing her the responsibility. With a trembling hand, she complies, holding Bright's nose with a gentle touch. Bright, seemingly lifeless, finally responds to Keisha's efforts, gasping for air. "Oh, my God. Oh, my God," Keisha utters, a mix of relief and disbelief washing over her as she witnesses him taking breaths. Bright slowly opens his eyes, his gaze blurry as he looks up at Keisha. "Where am I?" he mumbles, disoriented by the sudden turn of events. "Oh, my God. You're alive!" Keisha exclaims, her eyes welling up with tears. "He's alive!" the driver echoes, relief evident in his voice. Applause ripples through the crowd as the realization sets in that Bright is alive and breathing. Trying to rise, Bright winces in pain. "What happened?" he queries, attempting to make sense of the situation. "You got into an accident. You're gonna be fine," Keisha reassures him, her voice a comforting presence amidst the chaos. "The ambulance is on its way," she adds, offering a glimmer of hope. "Oh, here, they want to talk to you," the driver says, handing the phone to Keisha. "Me?" she questions, surprised. "Yeah, you," the driver affirms. Keisha, still kneeling next to Bright, accepts the phone. "Yeah?" she answers, uncertainty in her voice. "They say give him mouth-to-mouth, keep him awake," the voice on the other end instructs. Keisha, overwhelmed but determined, follows the directives. As Bright regains consciousness and begins to speak, Keisha's initial shock gives way to a mix of emotions. "Keisha," he calls out, a smile gracing his lips. "Oh, thank God it's you." Confused yet touched, Keisha responds, "Hey. Hey, thank God it's you." Bright, showing gratitude and affection, attempts to pull her into a hug. "You're okay. The ambulance is on its way," she reassures him, her heart still racing from the intensity of the situation. Sirens wail in the distance, a reassuring signal that help is imminent. "I hear it. Ah, finally. Thank God," Keisha says, her emotions on a rollercoaster. Bright, surprising her with an affectionate gesture, grabs her hand. Still bewildered by the unexpected turn of events, Keisha is left grappling with the emotional whirlwind as the ambulance approaches. The paramedics swiftly attend to Bright as Keisha stands anxiously by his side. "We're gonna take you to the hospital, get checked out," the paramedic informs them, a sense of urgency in their voice. "You're gonna come with me, right?" Bright looks up at Keisha, his eyes seeking reassurance amidst the chaos. "To the hospital?" Keisha clarifies, a mix of concern and confusion in her expression. "Yeah, I kinda need you to come, please," Bright implores, his voice laced with vulnerability. Keisha, her hands folded across her chest, stands there, visibly conflicted. "Me?" she questions, her uncertainty evident. "It's probably best you come, just to keep him relaxed," the paramedic interjects, understanding the delicate situation. Keisha, still grappling with the unexpected turn of events, finally relents. "Okay," she agrees, a subdued acknowledgement. "Thank you," Bright says softly to her, his gratitude palpable. Keisha, still in a state of confusion, moves back slightly as Bright is gently placed onto a stretcher and guided into the waiting ambulance. The metallic doors of the ambulance close behind Bright, and Keisha watches a mixture of concern and newfound responsibility etched across her face. As the ambulance pulls away, sirens wailing in the night, Keisha takes a deep breath, realizing that the day has taken a surreal turn. The paramedic, sensing her unease, offers a few comforting words, "He's in good hands. We'll take good care of him." Keisha manages a faint smile, appreciating the reassurance, but her mind is still racing with the whirlwind of emotions. She glances around, the ordinary surroundings of the bookstore now tinged with an unexpected intensity. The neon lights flicker overhead, casting an ethereal glow on the sidewalk. The once serene evening has transformed into a moment of uncertainty As the ambulance disappears into the distance, Keisha, determined to be a source of support for Bright, makes her way to her car. The engine purrs to life, and she follows the ambulance's path to the hospital, her thoughts a jumble of worry and an unspoken acknowledgement that this chance encounter has woven their lives together in ways neither could have predicted.
