1 *THE BETRAYAL*

"Sabrina gets the company." Three words. That's all it took to detonate Evelyn Hawthorne's entire world. She stood frozen in the marble foyer of their Upper East Side mansion, designer heels clicking against the cold floor as her mother's announcement echoed off the vaulted ceilings. Around her, priceless art and crystal chandeliers suddenly felt like props in someone else's life. "What?" The word barely escaped her throat. Margot Hawthorne didn't even look up from her martini. "The board votes tomorrow. Sabrina will inherit Hawthorne Industries." "But I've been running the mergers department for three years—" "And your sister has been charming investors while you've been buried in spreadsheets like some glorified accountant." Margot's ice-blue eyes finally met hers. "Business is about relationships, Evelyn. Something you've never understood." Sabrina appeared at the top of the grand staircase like a golden apparition, her perfect smile sharp enough to cut glass. "Don't look so shocked, Evie. Did you really think Mother would trust billions to someone who can't even keep her own fiancé interested?" The blood drained from Evelyn's face. "What are you talking about?" "Oh, sweet sister." Sabrina descended the stairs with predatory grace, phone in hand. "Bradley and I have been having the most enlightening conversations lately." The photo on the screen made Evelyn's knees buckle—Bradley's hands tangled in Sabrina's blonde hair, both of them naked, his mouth on her throat. The timestamp read three days ago. "You're lying." But the words felt hollow even as she spoke them. "Am I?" Sabrina's laugh was like champagne bubbles over broken glass. "He's actually upstairs in my room right now. Shall we call him down?" The Persian rug beneath Evelyn's feet seemed to shift and blur. "Three years," she whispered. "We've been together for three years." "Three years of mediocre s*x and listening to you drone about quarterly reports," Sabrina purred. "Really, Evie, you should thank me. I've liberated him from a life of terminal boredom." Margot sipped her martini like she was watching afternoon television. "Pack your things. You have until morning." "This is my home—" "This was never your home." Margot's voice could have frozen hell. "You've been a charity case for twenty-five years. Consider your charity revoked." --- Twenty minutes later, Evelyn stood outside Bradley's Tribeca penthouse, her hands shaking as she pressed the buzzer. She needed to hear it from him, needed some explanation that didn't make her feel like the world's biggest fool. The door opened to reveal Bradley in a silk robe, his hair mussed, smelling like expensive cologne and someone else's perfume. "Jesus Christ, Evelyn. What are you doing here?" "I needed to talk to you." Her voice cracked despite her best efforts. "Please, just tell me this is some sick joke—" "The only joke here is that it took me three years to realize what a mistake you were." The words hit like a physical blow. "Bradley, please—" "Please what? Please pretend you're not the most boring woman I've ever f****d?" He laughed, cruel and sharp. "You lie there like a corpse, Evelyn. Do you know how exhausting it is to pretend you're even remotely good in bed?" Each word was a knife twist. "We were going to get married—" "I was going to marry your trust fund. There's a difference." He stepped closer, towering over her. "You're pathetic. Desperate. No wonder your own mother can't stand you." The slap came without thinking, her palm connecting with his cheek so hard it echoed in the hallway. For a moment, they both stood frozen. Then Bradley's hand shot out, backhanding her with enough force to send her stumbling into the wall. Stars exploded across her vision, her cheek burning like fire. "You crazy b***h," he snarled, flexing his fingers. "No wonder everyone walks all over you." "Bradley, darling, who's making all that noise?" Sabrina appeared beside him wearing nothing but his shirt, her hair perfectly tousled. When she saw Evelyn, her face lit up with malicious delight. "Oh my God, Evie! What happened to your face?" "Your sister thinks she can play hardball," Bradley said. Sabrina stepped forward and kissed Bradley deeply, right in front of Evelyn, her hands tangling in his hair like she was staking claim to territory. When they broke apart, she smiled sweetly at her sister. "Poor little Evie. Always so dramatic." She turned to Bradley. "Call security, darling. I don't think she's mentally stable." Two massive men in black suits materialized as if from nowhere. Bradley gestured toward Evelyn like she was a piece of trash someone had left in his hallway. "Escort Miss Hawthorne from the premises. Make sure she understands she's not welcome back." "Don't touch me," Evelyn said, but her voice came out weak and broken. The guards didn't listen. They grabbed her arms and dragged her toward the elevator, her designer heels skittering across the marble floor. Other residents peeked out of their doors, phones already out, capturing Manhattan's former darling being hauled away like common garbage. "Make sure you get her good side!" Sabrina called after them, her laughter following Evelyn all the way to the street. They didn't just escort her out—they shoved her hard enough that she stumbled and fell, her dress tearing, her palms scraping against the concrete. The small crowd that had gathered laughed and pointed, some taking photos of the great Evelyn Hawthorne face-down on the sidewalk. "Stay down where you belong," one of the guards said before they disappeared back into the building. Evelyn lay there for a moment, tasting blood and humiliation, feeling the weight of stares and whispered comments. When she finally struggled to her feet, mascara streaking down her cheeks, dress torn and dirty, she looked up at the glittering towers around her and felt something dark and hungry unfurl in her chest. If they wanted to see the devil's daughter, she'd give them exactly that.
