1942 1942 CARL Soon after becoming a prisoner at Ilag 5, Carl Merritt discovered a knee-high c***k in the wooden wall where he could watch vehicles come and go through the main gate of the civilian wartime prison camp. He also had a decent view of a smaller building that served as the camp’s headquarters, where the commanding officer, Colonel Webber ran things strictly and efficiently. When Carl leaned to the left, he could just see a portion of the barracks where the guards lived; that was it for the view. Anytime there was a commotion in the camp, Carl got on his hands and knees to peer through the c***k to see what was happening.
