STEPHANIE MAINZ The demons had changed Stephanie Mainz’s job from assembling spears to moving rock dust from one part of the cave to another. After the Great Escape, as the people left behind now referred to the FBI’s rescue of so many people from the mines, Stephanie had been given the Russian girl’s job of pushing the wheeled cart from the end of the restored conveyor belt to a smaller cavern a half-mile away. She only guessed at the distance, of course, since the cart she pushed didn’t come with an odometer. Her new job was harder than the old one, but now she moved freely without shackles on her ankles.
