“I think Roddy is a big boy who can take care of himself,” I say. “So when you’re able to get your own place, you’re just going to leave him?” I’m startled by the question. I don’t think it’s any of your f*****g business, Gary. I rise from the wooden stool. “Maybe this wasn’t such a good idea. I should go—” “Hey, hey, hey!” Gary says hastily. “I’m sorry, okay? I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to offend you. I talk out of my ass sometimes.” Sometimes? “I care about Roddy, that’s all.” “I do, too,” I say. “I’m sorry for prying,” he says, and it sounds sincere. “I’ll stop talking about it. Now would you please take a seat? You don’t want to throw away a fabulous opportunity just because of my big mouth, do you?” I hesitate, then shake my head, putting a reluctant smile on my face.
