Chapter Three: The Golden Cage The silence in the Archibald Gallery stretched taut, vibrating with the audacity of Silas Vane’s demand. Two million dollars versus her entire life’s freedom. Maya blinked, trying to process the sheer absurdity of the proposal. "That’s a ridiculous condition. You’re asking me to be your—your possession." Silas didn't flinch. He maintained that chillingly calm, predatory smile. "Possession is such a harsh word. I prefer curator. I am offering security, resources, and the undisturbed peace you need to create your best work. I know you were just rejected for the Guggenheim grant, Maya. I know your rent is two months overdue, and I know your landlord is filing for eviction tomorrow morning." Maya gasped, stepping back abruptly, her shoulder bumping against the abstract painting behind her. How could he possibly know that? She had paid her bills online discreetly just hours ago. "How—that’s private information. That’s insane." "I am a security specialist, Ms. Elias. Information is my currency." He lowered his hand from the wall, allowing her space, but the atmosphere remained heavy. "You are an investment, Maya. I protect my investments fiercely. In my penthouse, you will have a studio bigger than your entire apartment, the highest quality materials delivered daily, and total safety. You lack all three currently." He moved past her, walking with casual elegance toward the gallery exit, clearly assuming the negotiation was over. "The car is waiting outside. We can finalize the papers with my lawyers tonight. Or you can walk home in the rain and face the eviction notice tomorrow." He didn't need to turn around to know she was following him. The shock of his knowledge about her life choices was a powerful leash. She had nowhere else to turn. The penthouse was less a home and more a fortress made of glass, steel, and a terrifying amount of technology. It was sparse, hyper-modern, and vast. The view of the city lights was blinding, making her small, cluttered apartment feel like a memory from a different lifetime. A woman in a crisp uniform greeted them in the foyer. "Welcome home, Mr. Vane." "LUNA, show Ms. Elias to the East Wing studio and adjoining suite," Silas commanded. He didn’t even look at Maya as he shed his tailored suit jacket and tossed it onto a minimalist leather chaise lounge. "She'll need a full wardrobe fitting arranged for tomorrow. I expect dinner will be served in thirty minutes." "Right away, sir." Maya stood frozen in the marble foyer. "Wait. Dinner? I assumed I could just..." She gestured vaguely toward the exit, which was blocked by a silent, armed security guard who had materialized from the shadows. "Leave?" Silas turned his cold eyes on her. "You are my artist-in-residence. We follow a routine here. You will eat, you will rest, and you will paint. In that order. Do not attempt to leave the premises without my escort, Maya. The world out there is unsafe. Here, you are secure." "Secure is one thing, Mr. Vane. Prisoner is another," she challenged, finding a sliver of defiance. A dark, dangerous look crossed his features—a look she recognized from the alleyways of her city, a look of pure, unadulterated power. "Let's get the terminology correct," he said, stepping close enough for her to feel the warmth radiating off his body. "A prisoner wants to leave. You are exactly where you need to be. The only place you can be. And soon, you won't even want to consider the outside world." He leaned in further, his presence overwhelming her senses. "Now, go get settled. I require proximity to my investments." Maya was escorted away by LUNA, the silent assistant, down a hallway that seemed endless. As the door to her luxurious suite closed with a soft, final click, she realized she hadn't felt the sting of the rain she’d walked through the night before. But the chill of Silas Vane was just beginning to set in. She was safe, rich, and utterly trapped. The gold paint of her new cage glittered in the recessed lighting.
