Chapter 5

632 Words
Bridget grabbed the last couple items on her list as quickly as she could. She was baffled by the encounter with the woman as she distinctly heard **2 cans of black beans!!** while she stood in line. Moments later, the tall man she had seen in the produce section walked up and stood behind her in line.. **eggs CHECK!, bread CHECK!, cheese CHECK!, milk CHECK!, tomatoes CHECK!, 2 cans of black beans CHECK!!** She glanced behind her with annoyance evident in her eyes. "Is there a problem miss?" He asked in slightly wheezy voice, "am I standing to close? I'm the appropriate required social distance, according to this mark on the ground." Bridget stared at him and tried to recover from her surprise at the sound of his voice. "Um, no sir, I just didn't see you at first," she muttered as she quickly turned back around. What the heck? Her confusion was even greater now, the man sounded nothing like the shouting she had just heard. That voice was powerful and quite forceful, demanding attention. "Well then, have a nice day," the man rasped from behind her. Bridget shook her head.. what the heck? She tried to shake the strange feeling, the voice she heard and the man had the same tone, just the delivery was different. Maybe his voice was just strained after all that shouting.. She loaded the groceries on the belt and was continued checking out. As she walked to her car, a gorgeous melody rang out through the air. She looked around to find the source but quickly gave up because the parking lot was very crowded and she needed to get going. She sent the text to the customer and drove off, enjoying the music until it faded away. She arrived at the house to deliver the order and sent a text saying she had arrived a requested by the woman when she had sent the auto text letting her know she was on the way. She gathered the grocery bags and walked towards the door. **please don't ring the bell, I just got her settled down!!** Bridget jumped at the volume of the woman's exclamation, wasn't it counter productive to shout if you don't want the bell rang? She shook her head, bewildered as she set down the bags. The door opened as she turned and Bridget couldn't help but let out a gasp as she openly stared at the mother and child. The newborn was surrounded by a powerful blue glow, the most brilliant shade of cobalt blue Bridget had ever seen. "Sorry for startling you, I'm so sorry to ask, I know it's against policy because of the pandemic but could you please carry the groceries inside," the mother asked softly, exhaustion clear in her voice.   **please say yes, I can't put her down, she'll freak out!!** "Of course, ma'am, no problem, I'm happy to help," Bridget replied, trying to keep her voice from shaking. The last sentence had been delivered at top volume again but there was one problem. The woman's mouth hadn't moved. Bridget quickly brought the groceries inside as the woman thanked her. Bridget felt relief spreading through her body. It was very strong relief and didn't seem connected to her own feeling about setting down the bags. On the heels of that came an overwhelming feeling of love, the pure love a mother feels for her child. Bridget shook her head to clear her mind and glanced at the newborn in her mother's arms on her way out the door, the baby was still glowing cobalt blue. Now I'm hallucinating. What the hell is wrong with me? She drove away, questioning her sanity as she picked up her phone to call Heather. The call again went to voice mail. She sighed and decided to continue her shopping for other people's groceries.
