CHAPTER TWENTY THREE ## KIERAN The alarm went off at five thirty, the same time it did every morning. I silenced it and lay still for a moment, staring at the ceiling as my mind sorted through the tasks waiting for me today. The syndicate meeting at nine, territorial reports from my captains at noon, a shipment coming in from the docks that needed my personal approval. And somewhere in all of that, figuring out what the hell was going on with my wife. I pushed myself out of bed and headed for the bathroom, my feet silent on the cold marble floor. The shower was already running by the time I stepped in, steam filling the space as hot water beat against my shoulders. I'd installed the system myself years ago, programmed it to start heating exactly three minutes before my alarm went off
