THE FOOLISH MONKEY

Once upon a time , there was a king who had a pet monkey .

The monkey was free to move about in the royal household because he was the king's pet . He entertained and served the king well .

One hot day , the king was fast asleep . The monkey sat by his side , fanning him with a hand - fan . He suddenly noticed a fly sitting on the king ' s head . He shooed it away .

The fly flew away , but soon returned to sit on the king ' s chest .

The monkey was impatient and decided to teach the fly a lesson . There was a dagger lying by the king ' s bed . He picked it up and drove it through the fly . The fly flew away again , but the king had been stabbed in the heart and died at once .

"There is a useful lesson in this story,' said Karataka . A king who cares for his life should not have a servant who is a fool .'

He then told another tale that showed how clever people could save the lives of others.
