Chapter 2: The Awakening

Seraphina didn’t sleep that night. Even after the storm settled and the house grew quiet again, her heart continued to race as if something inside her refused to calm down. The broken window had been covered with thick blankets, but the cold night air still slipped into the room. The crimson glow of the Blood Moon had faded hours ago, yet Seraphina still felt its presence lingering in her bones. She sat on the edge of her bed, staring at her hands. They were normal again. No red glow. No strange energy. Just her hands. Maybe I imagined it, she thought. But deep down, she knew that wasn’t true. Across the room, her grandmother sat silently in a wooden chair. She had not gone to sleep either. Her sharp green eyes remained fixed on Seraphina as if she were studying something dangerous. Seraphina finally broke the silence. “Grandma… what happened to me?” Evelyn didn’t answer immediately. Instead, she stood up slowly and walked toward the covered window. She gently lifted the curtain and looked outside into the darkness. The forest surrounding the house was quiet. Too quiet. After a long moment she lowered the curtain again and turned back to Seraphina. “Tell me exactly what you felt,” she said. Seraphina hesitated. “It started when I looked at the moon,” she said slowly. “My chest started hurting, like something was burning inside me. Then… I heard a voice.” Evelyn stiffened. “What did it say?” Seraphina swallowed. “It said… she has awakened.” The words hung heavily in the room. Evelyn’s face drained of color. “No…” she whispered under her breath. Seraphina stood up. “Grandma, what’s going on?” she demanded. “You clearly know something.” For a long time Evelyn said nothing. Then she walked over to an old wooden cabinet in the corner of the room and opened it. Inside were dozens of ancient books, their covers worn and their pages yellow with age. Seraphina had seen them before, but her grandmother had always forbidden her from touching them. Evelyn carefully pulled one out. The book looked incredibly old, its leather cover cracked with time. Strange symbols were carved into the front. Seraphina frowned. “What language is that?” “Older than any language you know,” Evelyn replied quietly. She placed the book on the table and opened it. Dust rose into the air as the pages turned. Seraphina stepped closer. The pages were filled with drawings—strange creatures, symbols, and diagrams of the moon. Then she saw something that made her stomach drop. A drawing of a red moon. Underneath it was a picture of a girl surrounded by swirling energy. The girl looked eerily similar to her. “What… is this?” Seraphina whispered. Evelyn closed the book suddenly. “A story,” she said. Seraphina crossed her arms. “Stop doing that.” “Doing what?” “Talking like everything is some kind of riddle,” Seraphina snapped. “Something happened tonight, Grandma. Something impossible. I deserve to know the truth.” Evelyn looked at her carefully. For a moment it seemed like she might finally speak. But then— A loud howl echoed through the distant forest. Seraphina froze. The sound was deep, powerful, and haunting. Another howl followed. Then another. Wolves. But something about them felt… wrong. Evelyn’s expression hardened instantly. “They’re here.” Seraphina blinked. “Who?” Before Evelyn could answer, a powerful gust of wind slammed against the house. The lights flickered violently. Outside, shadows moved between the trees. Seraphina rushed toward the window and pulled the curtain aside. Her breath caught in her throat. Two glowing golden eyes stared back at her from the darkness of the forest. A massive black wolf stood at the edge of the trees. It was far larger than any wolf she had ever seen before. And it was watching her. Seraphina stumbled backward. “Grandma…” Evelyn had already grabbed a small silver knife from the table. “Stay behind me,” she said. “What is that thing?” But before Evelyn could answer— The wolf suddenly disappeared into the forest. The silence returned just as quickly as it had been broken. Seraphina frowned. “Did it just leave?” Evelyn slowly lowered the knife. “No,” she said quietly. “It was only confirming something.” Seraphina’s heart sank. “Confirming what?” Evelyn looked directly into her eyes. “You.” Miles Away – Deep Within the Forest Kael Stormborn stood barefoot on the cold forest ground, his chest rising and falling slowly as his wolf senses stretched across miles of wilderness. The night air carried a scent he had never smelled before. Magic. Ancient magic. And something else. A girl. His golden eyes glowed in the darkness. Behind him, several members of his pack shifted uneasily. “Alpha,” one of them said. “What did you sense?” Kael didn’t answer immediately. He was listening. Feeling. The strange pull inside his chest was growing stronger. Finally he spoke. “She’s here.” The wolves exchanged confused looks. “Who?” Kael lifted his head toward the distant town lights. “My mate.” Meanwhile – In the Vampire Citadel High above the city, inside a massive gothic castle hidden from human eyes, Lucien Nightfall sat upon a black throne carved from stone. Candles flickered across the dark hall. A tall vampire with silver hair knelt before him. “My prince,” the vampire said carefully. “Our scouts confirm a powerful magical surge near Blackthorn.” Lucien leaned back in his throne. His crimson eyes glowed faintly. “I felt it,” he said calmly. “The Blood Witch,” the vampire whispered. Lucien’s lips curled into a faint smile. “Yes.” He stood slowly. His long black coat flowed behind him as he walked toward the massive window overlooking the city. “Prepare the carriage,” he ordered. The vampire looked surprised. “You’re going yourself?” Lucien’s eyes darkened. “For centuries we have waited for the Blood Witch to awaken.” He turned back toward the room. “And now that she finally has…” A dangerous smile appeared on his face. “I would like to meet her personally.” Back at Seraphina’s House Seraphina sat silently at the kitchen table, her thoughts racing. “Grandma,” she said slowly. “Yes?” “Were those… wolves?” Evelyn didn’t look at her. “No.” Seraphina’s stomach dropped. “Then what were they?” Evelyn finally met her gaze. “They were the beginning of something much worse.” Seraphina felt a chill crawl up her spine. “Grandma…” Evelyn reached across the table and grabbed her hand tightly. “You need to listen to me very carefully,” she said. “Because from this moment on, your life will never be normal again.” Seraphina swallowed. “Why?” Evelyn’s voice dropped to a whisper. “Because tonight… the supernatural world felt your magic awaken.” Seraphina’s heart pounded. “And now,” Evelyn said gravely, “they’re coming for you.” Outside, far beyond the quiet town of Blackthorn, two powerful forces were already moving closer. One from the shadows of the forest. The other from the darkness of the night. And neither of them intended to leave without her.
