We looked for the Russian. Tore the city up. We looked in every known dive crooks, killers, and shysters liked to mingle in. Looked in every expensive hotel. Every cheap hotel. We searched through empty buildings. Monitored phone calls of people we thought the Russian might need in order wiggle out of our reach. We looked in the sewers. Looked in trash cans, outhouses, whorehouses, cathedrals, hair salons, movie houses, pool halls. We monitored crowds. Watched the airports. The bus terminals. The rails. Threw up roadblocks on every major thoroughfare leaving the city. Nothing. Nada. Nyet. This guy was like a bad nightmare. When around, he scared the bejesus out of everyone. But when he disappeared, he was like a wisp of early morning dew. Vaporizing into nothingness the moment sunlight
