Chapter 6 The rover’s tires rolled over gravel, kicking up dust that swirled in the dim morning light. Arthur hunched over the wheel, his skinny bodyframe aching from hours of driving, his eyes tired from lack of sleep . The wasteland stretched endless around them like the Arabian desert, a graveyard of twisted metal and scorched earth, remnants of wars Elysara had dodged until now. The air was thick with the stench of rotten flesh, carried on a wind that howled through shattered husks of old war machines. In the back, Lena sat rigid, her blonde ponytail let loose. Harlan’s confession, his role in silencing threats, maybe even Arthur’s parents had cracked something in her, and she hadn’t spoken to her father since. Harlan himself was a shadow in the passenger seat, his scarred face turned to the window, rifle across his lap, guilt etched in every line. Professor Stones scribbled in his notebook, muttering about viral sequences, his rumpled lab coat stained with sweat and blood. Brian, sprawled among his gadgets, tinkered with a drone, but his usual cocky grin was gone, his wild curls damp with nervous sweat. The kid’s eyes darted, like he expected something to go sideways at any second. Arthur’s gut twisted, not just from the jerky motion of the rover but from the weight of it all. His parents’ deaths weren’t an accident.Harlan and Stones’ admission confirmed it. They’d been whistleblowers, like Stones said, poking into the government’s dirty secrets, and it cost them everything. Arthur’s fingers tightened on the wheel, his knife heavy in his pocket. He wanted to scream, to demand answers, but the road demanded focus. Zombies trailed them, their moans a distant chorus, and the evolved ones scarred, too smart watched from ridges, waiting. Arthur’s dreams of inventing a better world, of being someone, felt like a kid’s fantasy now. Survival was the only goal, and even that seemed like a long shot. “We’re close,” Stones said, breaking the silence, his voice thin but urgent. “Outpost’s ten kilometers north. Bunker’s got the answers. But it’s guarded, Kael’s enforcers or worse.” “Worse?” Brian snorted, his sarcasm brittle. “What, super-zombies now?” He fiddled with his tablet, pulling up a grainy drone feed. “Got movement ahead zombies, I think.” Lena leaned forward, her baton humming faintly. “More zombies?” “Maybe,” Harlan grunted, his first word in hours. His eyes flicked to Lena, pleading, but she looked away, her jaw tight. Arthur caught it the bridge between them was a wound that wouldn’t close. He felt it too, the sting of Harlan’s half-truths. The man had silenced people, maybe not with a bullet but with complicity. Arthur’s parents could’ve been on that list, and the thought made his chest burn. A massive, muscled zombie suddenly appeared in front of the rover. Tall like a bear, muscles bulging from torn and ragged flesh. “Contact!!!!” Arthur roared. He swayed, and collided with a rubble and hit his head on the steering wheel and lost consciousness. “Spread out!!!!” Harlan screamed as he pointed his rifle and fired some shots at the monster. The sergeant fired, bursts of bullets ripping into the beast's chest. Chunks of flesh flew, black blood oozing, but the monster didn't drop. It charged, faster than anything that size should move, its massive fists swinging like hammers. “What the F—” Harlan froze. Before he could take another shot, the monster charged at him and punched him in the ribs and sent him flying into the rubbles.Harlan lost consciousness immediately. “Dad!!!!” Lena screamed. She swung her baton, blue arcs dancing, but it dodged with eerie grace, grabbing It tilted its head trying to look at Lena who looked small compared to it's size. It grinned at her, grabbed her by the neck, choking her. Its grip was iron, lifting her off the ground like a doll. Lena thrashed, kicking, her muffled cries furious. The beast leaned in, its foul breath hot on her skin, it licked her cheek, “Over here, over here you ugly bastard!!!!" Brian screamed, his voice cracked through the chaos trying to distract it. It dropped Lena, who was trying to catch her breath and walked towards Brian grinning. Brian started running and tripped. “Holy God, God in heaven” Brian muttered as he froze. The fourteen-year-old stood there, hoodie askew, eyes wide with terror. He backed up, legs like jelly, his gadgets forgotten in his pack. "Oh s**t," he whispered, as the zombie lumbered forward, raising both fists high, ready to smash his skull like a melon. Time slowed. Arthur pushed up from the rubble, ignoring the injuries, his half torn shirt drenched in his blood. His machete where was it? There, half-buried in the dirt. He snatched it, charging with a yell that tore from his throat. The zombie paused, sensing him. It swung its right arm at Arthur like a hammer, Arthur ducked and swung his blade and it cut it's thigh barely making any significant damage. Arthur took 6 steps backward, taking a fighting pose with the blade in his hands. “Come at me you bastard!!!!” he roared. His hands trembling Blood dripped from the gash on his forehead where he had slammed into the steering wheel. The professor stood at a distance, witnessing everything and taking down notes in his journal about the zombie. Fascinating,” he mumbled, his glasses covered with dust. “Neural retention… enhanced strength…” He muttered. Its grin widened, teeth jagged and black, as if it relished the challenge. Arthur’s heart thundered, his parents’ faces flashing in his mind. “Come at me you bastard!!” Arthur yelled again. The zombie charged forward aggressively with insane speed, its massive fists swinging, each step shaking the ground. Arthur darted left, barely dodging a blow that cratered the dirt where he had stood. His side screamed, blood seeping faster, but he gritted his teeth, circling like a street dog who’d learned to fight dirty. Brian, still sprawled where he’d tripped, snapped out of his freeze. “s**t, s**t, s**t,” he muttered, fumbling for his pack. His hands shook as he yanked out a grenade cobbled together with mess of wires and a battery he had rigged for traps. “Arthur, keep it busy!” he shouted, his voice high with panic but edged with the kid’s usual defiance. He scrambled to his feet, his wild curls bouncing as he worked to arm the device. The zombie lunged again, faster than its body size suggested. Arthur ducked under a swinging arm, his machete slashing at its side. The blade bit shallow, black blood oozing, but the beast barely flinched. It roared, a sound that rattled Arthur’s bones, and kicked out, its boot catching him in the chest. His machete clattering away. Pain exploded, his vision blurry, but he forced himself up, spitting blood. “Not done yet,” he muttered, his sharp tongue a lifeline to his fading strength. Brian, now!” Arthur yelled, dodging another blow that grazed his shoulder, tearing his shirt further. His vision blurred, blood loss making him lightheaded, but he kept moving, drawing the zombie away from the others. Brian suddenly leaped on it, stabbed it's neck, it let out a sharp pain, exposing it's mouth. Brian immediately triggered the grenade and dumped it in it's mouth. The grenade beeped, red light flickering. “Eat this freak” he shouted The zombie caught Brian and threw him away. The grenade strucked, the explosion was small but sharp, blowing it's head off. The zombie collapsed to the ground “Did… did we get it?” Arthur mumbled, his voice slurring. The zombie’s headless corpse lay still, black blood pooling like oil. Arthur collapsed to the ground and lost consciousness. Lena’s hands worked fast, tearing fabric to pack the wound. “Stay with me, Arthur,” she said, her voice breaking.
