They ran until the forest changed.
Eclipsewood’s familiar trees thinned, replaced by towering pines that swayed as if whispering warnings. The air felt heavier here—thick with moonlight, thick with shadow, thick with the Veil’s breath. Willow’s lungs burned, her legs tired, her magic pacing beneath her ribs like a wild animal in a cage.
Something inside her was changing.
Kade slowed first, chest rising and falling in shallow bursts. His wolf was so close to the surface, Willow could feel the heat radiating off him like a furnace. Lucian stopped beside her, shadows moving protectively around her, reacting to every uneven breath she took.
The envoy shifted back into human form, eyes wide and alert. “We’re out of Sanctum territory.”
Willow leaned against a tree, trying to steady herself. “Good.”
But the forest didn’t feel safe.
It felt charged.
Alive.
Waiting.
Lucian’s gaze snapped upward. “The Veil is moving.”
Kade stiffened. “No. Willow’s magic is.”
Willow pressed a hand to her chest. Her heartbeat was unsteady—it beat in strange rhythms, syncing with the moonlight gleaming through the branches. Every throb sent a ripple of shadow across the ground. Every breath made the air warp, bending around her like a heat haze.
“I don’t… I don’t feel right,” she whispered.
Lucian stepped closer, voice low and steady. “Your magic is changing.”
Kade moved to her other side, eyes glowing gold. “It’s reacting to the breach.”
Willow shook her head. “What did I do?”
“You didn’t cause it,” Lucian said softly. “You felt it.”
Kade’s voice followed, warm and fierce. “And you pushed it back.”
Willow’s voice trembled. “But something’s wrong.”
The forest answered her.
A low hum rolled through the trees—deep, resonant, ancient. The ground vibrated beneath her feet. The moonlight flickered. The shadows recoiled. The air tightened.
Lucian’s eyes widened. “Willow—”
Her magic snapped.
Moonlight burst from her skin, blinding and sharp. Shadows erupted from her spine, spiraling upward like smoke caught in a storm. The forest bent inward, trees groaning, branches twisting as if bowing to her.
Kade grabbed her shoulders. “Willow! Willow, breathe!”
Lucian’s shadows wrapped around her waist, steadying her. “Focus on my voice.”
But Willow couldn’t hear them.
She heard something else.
A whisper—soft, cold, hungry.
Catalyst…
Kade caught her before she hit the ground, pulling her against his chest. Lucian knelt beside them, one hand hovering near her cheek, shadows trembling violently.
The whisper came again, curling through her bones.
Catalyst… heart of shadow… pulse of moon…
Willow gasped, her magic surging violently. She felt everything too deeply: fear, heat, cold, hunger, grief, longing.
Her magic wasn’t just surging.
It was transforming.
Kade’s voice broke through the haze, raw and desperate. “Willow, stay with me.”
Lucian’s voice followed, sharp and terrified. “Willow, look at me.”
She tried.
But the Veil pulsed.
A shockwave tore through the clearing—silent, invisible, devastating. The envoy was thrown backward. Kade staggered but didn’t let go. Lucian’s shadows shattered like glass, reforming instantly around her.
Willow screamed.
Moonlight exploded outward. Shadows spiraled violently. The ground cracked beneath her. The air split with a sound like tearing fabric.
And then—
She saw it.
Not physically. But clearly.
A Hollow born face—shapeless, shifting—pressed against the Veil. Its eyes were voids. Its voice was a whisper of frost.
Catalyst…
Willow’s heart stopped.
Lucian’s voice broke. “Willow—pull back!”
Kade roared, half-shifted, claws digging into the earth. “Let her go!”
But the Hollow born didn’t want to let go.
It wanted her.
Catalyst… open…
Willow’s magic surged again—violent, instinctive, terrified. The forest shook. The Veil trembled. The Hollow born shrieked without sound, recoiling as if it were burned.
Kade pulled her into his arms, holding her tight. “I’ve got you. I’ve got you.”
Lucian pressed a hand to her back, shadows wrapping around her like a second embrace. “You’re safe. You’re safe.”
The Hollow born vanished.
The Veil stilled.
The forest exhaled.
Willow collapsed, shaking violently. Kade held her against his chest, his wolf fully surfaced, protective and trembling. Lucian knelt beside them, shadows embraced around her like a blanket.
The envoy stared, pale and shaken. “She… she pushed it back again.”
Lucian’s voice was barely a whisper. “No. It wasn’t just a push.”
Kade looked down at Willow, eyes wide with awe and fear. “She changed it.”
Willow’s breath quivered. “I'm sorry, I didn’t mean to.”
Lucian met her gaze, silver eyes burning. “Willow… you didn’t just wake the Veil.”
Kade swallowed hard. “You’re reshaping it.”
